Eighty percent of your visitors will read your headline; 20 percent read the first sentence after that. In that headline and first few sentences, give the user enough information to determine if they want to linger on the page or do a deeper dive into your site. Don\u2019t waste the opportunity with preamble or with thanking them for visiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid jargon, and always spell out acronyms on first use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"less-is-more\"><strong>Less is More<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Omit needless words. Bullet information when possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide only as much info as is needed to get your users to do what you would have them do (a.k.a. responding to the page\u2019s call to action).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depth is okay when readers need it. Approach your homepage and landing pages\u2019 content as if you were creating an outline. Save more in-depth information for content pages. If the user gets to a content page, chances are they are looking for more in-depth information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inverted-pyramid\">Use the Inverted Pyramid Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lead with the main message<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow with supporting information\/benefits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add background<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prime-space\"><strong>Use Prime Space Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors are trained to look for important information on certain parts of a web page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Top left<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a headline or list<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the beginning of a sentence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the beginning of the headline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"readability\"><strong>Check Readability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The average website user reads at an eighth grade reading level. And while we can expect more of the visitors to a university website, keep in mind that no one is put off by simple, elegant language but they are by language that they don\u2019t recognize.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get readability scores from Word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Preferences &gt; Spelling and Grammar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check \u2018Show readability statistics\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then Tools &gt; Spelling and Grammar to run a check<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Flesch\u2019 numbers at the end are the readability score and grade level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also evaluate your writing online: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hemingwayapp.com\">http:\/\/www.hemingwayapp.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"headings\"><strong>Use Headings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Makes scanning easier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides more entry points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helps with low-vision visitors and search engine optimization (if coded correctly)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should tell the story of the page in miniature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organize in outline style:<br><br><code class=\"block\"><br>&lt;h1&gt;Title&lt;\/h1&gt;<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&lt;h2&gt;Topic 1&lt;\/h2&gt;<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&lt;h3&gt;Subtopic A&lt;\/h3&gt;<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&lt;h3&gt;Subtopic B&lt;\/h3&gt;<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&lt;h2&gt;Topic 2&lt;\/h2&gt;<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&lt;h2&gt;Topic 3&lt;\/h2&gt;<br><br><\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"break-things-up\">Break Things Up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Break multiple paragraphs into shorter sections using sub-headings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use bullets to reformat long sentences that list several points or items<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When numbers are involved, consider a table to organize and display information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Magical_Number_Seven,_Plus_or_Minus_Two\">magical number 7, plus or minus two<\/a> to determine a good number of&nbsp; list items<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"audience\"><strong>Know Your Audience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use personas to assess what different people might expect to find on a web page&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>List the visitor\u2019s needs, what they are looking for, what motivates them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write content that speaks to this person and answers their specific questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The way audiences interact with the web is different from other written material.
