KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Oct. 23, 2024 \u2013 Scientist and historian Naomi Oreskes, of Harvard University, will discuss \u201cWhy Disinformation Matters<\/a>\u201d at the 溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium Tuesday, Oct. 29<\/strong>. Oreskes is co-author of the 2010 bestseller Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming<\/em>, and a leading voice on the role of science in society, the reality of anthropogenic climate change, and the role of disinformation in blocking climate action. Merchants of Doubt<\/em> was the subject of a documentary film and has been translated into nine languages. A new edition, with an introduction by Al Gore, published in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n

Students and guests attending this year\u2019s Honors Colloquium, \u2018Democracy in Peril,\u201d have shared thoughts answering the question, \u201cWhat does democracy mean to you?\u201d Responses are now on display at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield as part of an exhibit on \u2018Democracy Under Siege.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Oreskes<\/a>\u2019 work on climate sciences has appeared in leading media around the globe, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, the Times (London), Newsweek, The Economist, The New Yorker, The Guardian, Le Monde and more. A Guggenheim Fellow, her 2014 TED Talk<\/a> on why scientists should be trusted has had more than more than 1.6 million views worldwide. In addition to being featured in the Academy-Award winning film An Inconvenient Truth<\/em>, Oreskes wrote the introduction to Pope Francis\u2019 Encyclical on Climate Change and Inequality in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hosted by the University\u2019s Honors Program, this year\u2019s colloquium series, \u201cDemocracy in Peril<\/a>,\u201d examines threats to democracy at home and abroad. Oreskes\u2019 talk comes just one week before the U.S. presidential election, but colloquium coordinators say this year\u2019s lecture series is not only about the 2024 presidential race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe purpose of this colloquium is to highlight global trends, recognize that the U.S. is not immune from them, and hopefully provide guidance on how we can work to build a stronger, more resilient democracy at home and abroad,\u201d says Marc Hutchison<\/a>, chair of 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s political science department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oreskes will speak at 7 p.m. at Edwards Hall on the Kingston Campus. Her talk will also be streamed<\/a> (livestream links will be available the night of each event on the colloquium website).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Colloquium will conclude Nov. 12 with Christian Davenport<\/a> discussing \u201cRepression and the Decline of Global Human Rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s colloquium has drawn wide interest across the 溏心vlog免费B站 campus, including a visit from James Langevin and Adam Kinzinger<\/a> discussing election integrity, a campus art exhibit on \u2018The Politics of Personality,\u2019<\/a> and a democracy-themed student innovation challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
