  {"id":92486,"date":"2024-02-19T18:25:33","date_gmt":"2024-02-19T18:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=92486"},"modified":"2024-02-19T18:25:34","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T18:25:34","slug":"uri-to-host-princeton-scholar-to-decode-technologys-impact-on-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/uri-to-host-princeton-scholar-to-decode-technologys-impact-on-society\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 to host Princeton scholar to decode technology\u2019s impact on society"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Feb. 19, 2024 \u2013 Ruha Benjamin, the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of<a href=\"https:\/\/aas.princeton.edu\/people\/ruha-benjamin\"> African American Studies<\/a> at Princeton University, will explore the topic of \u201cUtopia, Dystopia or \u2026 Ustopia: Reckoning with the Future of Technology and Society,\u201d at the 溏心vlog免费B站 on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her lecture, which will be in the Hope Room of the Higgins Welcome Center on the Kingston Campus, Benjamin will use historical and sociological information to decode whether advancing technology will more closely resemble \u201cThe Matrix\u201d or \u201cThe Jetsons.\u201d The lecture is free and open to the public and will be livestreamed on Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/events\/2023\/12\/13\/utopia-dystopia-or-ustopia-reckoning-with-the-future-of-technology-society-featuring-dr-ruha-benjamin\/\">Registration<\/a> is required to attend the talk or receive a link to the livestream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am excited to host an internationally recognized writer and speaker on campus to discuss the implications of technological advances on our society,\u201d said Ammina Kothari, director of the Harrington School of Communication and Media. \u201cWhile Dr. Benjamin\u2019s studies involve complex issues, her work is very accessible and often comes with practical suggestions to address some of the inequities introduced by technological innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin\u2019s work looks at the relationship between science, technology, medicine and society, addressing debates about how science and technology shape the world and how people can, should and do critically engage technoscience \u2013 as they face the knowledge that what may bring health and longevity to some may threaten the dignity and rights of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her presentation at 溏心vlog免费B站 is important because there seem to be two camps: those who protest loss of privacy or built-in racism and those who regard new technology developments as keys to solving some of the world\u2019s most difficult challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin will introduce the audience to the world of biased tools, altruistic algorithms, and their many entanglements and provide tools to decode tech predictions with historical and sociological insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow do we develop approaches to health and well-being that don\u2019t simply substitute technological fixes for wider social change?,\u201d she writes on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruhabenjamin.com\/\">website<\/a>. \u201cFixes that do more to widen the gross inequities that already stratify life chances? How do we advance life sciences without reinforcing popular conceptions of race \u2026 as biological? Gender\u2026 as destiny? Or disability \u2026 as tragic? After all, as we push the boundaries of the \u2018human\u2019 with science and technology, we are also reinforcing (and sometimes redrawing) social fault lines in often-unexpected ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin is the founding director of the Ida B.
