Walsh specializes in oceanography and marine geology with ongoing research in coastal processes and hazards, estuarine dynamics, and continental-margin sedimentation. Along with colleagues and students, Walsh has been tracking recent shoreline changes along Rhode Island\u2019s south coast. He is available for interviews to share an informed perspective on coastal change in New England. A Fulbright Research Scholar, Walsh is a professor of oceanography and geological oceanographer with a doctorate in oceanography from the University of Washington. His research focuses on coastal sedimentary processes and related phenomena, such as erosion, sedimentation and the fate of microplastics. He studies processes shaping shorelines and is an expert in sand resources on the U.S. East Coast. Internationally, Walsh is well known for his research investigating how materials discharged by rivers are dispersed and accumulate in the ocean. He has conducted research around the world including in Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, California, France, and the Gulf of Mexico, evaluating ecosystem change, coastal hazards, and coastal changes related to storm events.
