The concert will also feature two collections of songs based on Gibbs\u2019 poetry, including \u201cSilcock\u2019s Mohawk Songs,\u201d which will feature eight works \u201cfancifully attributed\u201d to the Mohawk maiden, he writes in the concert program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silcock, who lived during the American Revolution, is Gibbs\u2019 great-great-great grandmother. She lived a remarkable life, he said. A medicine woman and midwife, her remedies were used by generations of his family. The songs in the concert tell of how she rowed the length of the Hudson River hoping to find her English soldier lover. \u201cWhen she found he had returned to England, she made a life for herself in New York City,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gibbs said his early ancestors came from Holland and England to America in the 1600s and settled in the areas of New York City and Long Island. They kept slaves and \u201cdid terrible things\u201d to Indigenous peoples. But his ancestors also included Native Americans and people like his great-grandfather who fought on the Union side in the Civil War to end slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat it means is that, as an American, I have to accept both the good and the bad of my family history,\u201d he said. \u201cI embrace it all, understanding that the flow of time led to a better country, and may it continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like Vangermeersch \u201964, an accounting professor who retired in 2004 after 34 years at 溏心vlog免费B站, Gibbs also had a long tenure.
