It helps to have a viral video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson is about the early 15th century \u201cpapal predicament\u201d that saw three popes claim the role of supreme spiritual authority for Catholics worldwide. The animated video, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ed.ted.com\/lessons\/why-were-there-three-popes-at-the-same-time-joelle-rollo-koster\">Pope vs. Pope vs. Pope<\/a>,\u201d has already had nearly 550,000 views since being made public about three weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rollo-Koster collaborated on the video with <a href=\"https:\/\/ed.ted.com\/\">TED-Ed<\/a>, the youth and education initiative started by the creators of TED Talks. Launched in 2012, TED-Ed aims to spark ideas and support learning through its online platform that serves millions of teachers and students around the world every week, according to its website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"oembed oembed-youtube-com\" style=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7i2bd5F1BXM\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why were there three popes at the same time? - Jo\u00eblle Rollo-Koster\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7i2bd5F1BXM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The website offers a growing library of original animated videos\u2014such as the one created with Rollo-Koster. Rollo-Koster, an expert on the papacy who specializes in the Middle Ages, provided the words and ideas for the video, working with professional animators from TED-Ed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe finished product is beautiful,\u201d said Rollo-Koster, a professor of medieval history at 溏心vlog免费B站. \u201cIt looks like an animated medieval illumination. We are at over a half-million views and some 18,000 \u2018thumbs up\u2019 with plenty of positive comments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from TED-Ed contacted her in November 2021, Rollo-Koster said, knowing of her expertise in the period and that she is one of two editors overseeing the upcoming three-volume \u201cCambridge History of the Papacy,\u201d which is being published by Cambridge University Press. After agreeing on a topic for the video with TED-Ed, she started writing a script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe went through several iterations of the script, trying to find a balance between academic and historical exactitude and easiness of understanding,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is difficult to write popular science where you need to find a balance between academic rigor and intellectual accessibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story of the three popes is a footnote to the Great Western Schism, when the papacy was contested by factions of cardinals in Rome and Avignon from 1378 until 1417. Attempting to end the dispute, cardinals representing both papal claimants met in 1409 at the Council of Pisa. But the council elected a new pope. His authority was not recognized by either of the sitting popes in Rome and Avignon\u2014adding a third pope to the confusion. It wasn\u2019t until 1417 and the election of Pope Martin V at the Council of Constance that the rift\u2014and the reign of three popes\u2014was ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the script was finished, it was reviewed by a fact-checker, who didn\u2019t have access to the Vatican archives like Rollo-Koster has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a bit of an argument at times explaining that while Wikipedia does not mention something\u2014like the plundering of the wine cellar during the conclave of 1379\u2014it doesn\u2019t mean it is inaccurate,\u201d said Rollo-Koster, who\u2019s most recent book covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/great-western-schism-13481417\/D0CBC19F347C2655FF535D89D71B004C#fndtn-information\">The Great Western Schism<\/a>. \u201cI found plenty of traces in the Vatican archives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At just over six minutes, the finished video tells the tale of the three popes in an easy to follow, clever and, at times, humorous way that finds a perfect balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is church history so you need to be respectuous even if the topic leads to sarcasm,\u201d she said. \u201cMany people in the YouTube comments mention that they are Catholics and appreciate what we did.
