{"id":81586,"date":"2022-11-17T14:21:06","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T14:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=81586"},"modified":"2022-11-17T14:21:08","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T14:21:08","slug":"food-justice-activist-leah-penniman-to-speak-on-racism-and-sovereignty-in-the-food-system-at-uri-dec-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2022\/11\/food-justice-activist-leah-penniman-to-speak-on-racism-and-sovereignty-in-the-food-system-at-uri-dec-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Food justice activist Leah Penniman to speak on racism and sovereignty in the food system at 溏心vlog免费B站 Dec. 6"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Nov. 17, 2022 \u2013 Leah Penniman, a Black Kreyol farmer, author and food justice activist, will present virtually at the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/hc\/\">溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium<\/a>, <strong>Tuesday, Dec. 6<\/strong>, on \u201cUprooting Racism and Seeding Sovereignty in the Food System.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penniman is co-director and farm manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulfirefarm.org\/\">Soul Fire Farm<\/a> in New York. A self-described soil nerd, Penniman co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to \u201cend racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to the land.\u201d As Soul Fire Farm\u2019s co-executive director and farm director, she leads a team that facilitates food sovereignty programs including farmer training for Black and Brown people, domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system, and a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid (lack of food access in communities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penniman\u2019s talk will be delivered virtually (only) as part of the fall Honors Colloquium, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/hc\/2022-just-good-food\/\">\u201cJust Good Food,\u201d<\/a> which will be streamed live (video links are available the day of each event at the link above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A farmer since 1996, she trained domestically at Many Hands Organic Farm and Farm School (Barre, Massachusetts) and abroad with farmers in Ghana, Haiti and Mexico. She holds a master\u2019s in science education and a B.A. in environmental science and international development from Clark University and taught high school biology and environmental science for 17 years. Her work and that of Soul Fire Farm has been recognized by the Fulbright Program and with a Soros Racial Justice Fellowship and James Beard Leadership Award, among others. Penniman has also authored Far<em>ming While Black: Soul Fire Farm\u2019s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land <\/em>and the upcoming <em>Black Earth Wisdom: Soulful Conversations with Black Environmentalists<\/em>, which she describes as \u201clove songs for the land and her people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow Penniman\u2019s work at @soulfirefarm on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium is the University\u2019s premier lecture series.
