Reese<\/a> will present at the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/hc\/\">溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium<\/a> Tuesday, Oct. 11, on \u201cBlack Food, Black Liberation: Thinking, Writing, and Living Beyond Black.\u201d Reese is an assistant professor in the Department of African &amp; African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She works in the area of Black food culture, social justice, and community resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reese will speak at 7 p.m. at Edwards Hall on the Kingston Campus, as part of the fall Honors Colloquium, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/hc\/2022-just-good-food\/\">\u201cJust Good Food,\u201d<\/a> which will be presented in person and streamed live (video links are available the day of each event at the link above). This lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an anthropologist who does critical food studies through a Black geographies framework,\u201d Reese says. \u201cI examine the ways Black people and communities navigate food inequities that are a byproduct of anti-Blackness and explore mechanisms for survival that thrive in spite of inequities.\u201d During the Oct. 11 talk, she will focus on the intersection of Black studies and critical food studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reese earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from American University and a bachelor\u2019s degree in history from Trinity University in Texas, and taught at Spelman College and the University of Maryland before joining the University of Texas. She has been published in a variety of academic and non-academic publications including <em>Oxford American<\/em> and <em>Gravy<\/em> magazine. She has written two books, <em>Black Food Geographies: Race, Self-Reliance, and Food Access<\/em>, which won the 2020 Best Monograph Award from the Association for the Study of Food and Society, and <em>Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice<\/em>, a collection co-edited with Hannah Garth; and is working on a third book, <em>The Carceral Life of Sugar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium is the University\u2019s premier lecture series. Hosted by the University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/honors\/\">Honors Program<\/a>, this university-wide educational forum is open to the public. This year\u2019s free lecture series will bring several experts to the Kingston Campus to examine local and global food systems, examining ways to create equitable, sustainable and resilient food systems, on Tuesday evenings through Dec. 13.
