  {"id":81037,"date":"2022-10-04T15:12:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T15:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=81037"},"modified":"2022-10-07T19:48:01","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T19:48:01","slug":"preparing-computer-systems-for-evolving-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/preparing-computer-systems-for-evolving-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparing computer systems for evolving technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Oct. 4, 2022 \u2013 Cloud applications and hardware devices have evolved significantly, but cloud systems sitting between cloud applications and hardware devices haven\u2019t progressed at the same rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weiwei Jia, who joined the computer engineering faculty at the 溏心vlog免费B站 this fall as an assistant professor, is developing the next generation of cloud systems that do a better job of handling current and future technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe systems used in the cloud were designed for legacy applications and traditional hardware,\u201d said Jia. \u201cThose systems don\u2019t consider the requirements of new applications or features of emerging hardware devices.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paving the way for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jia enjoys understanding, designing, and building scalable, high-performance, and practical computer systems for modern clouds and data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy research paves the way for modern clouds to deploy new services and applications,\u201d said Jia. \u201cThe research is practical, and it could make a real difference in society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two examples of systems designed by Jia that are expected to make a significant difference are a first task scheduler for edge computing, called DASEC, and an effective cloud memory management system, called GEMINI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DASEC helps edge computing provide low response times for a wide range of applications, such as autonomous robots and vehicles, online games and stocks, smart home devices, Internet of Things services, and augmented reality and virtual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GEMINI will greatly improve the performance of data intensive applications in virtualized clouds and data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s data-intensive applications, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and high-performance computing, are pervasive in clouds and data centers,\u201d said Jia. \u201cThese applications usually need large computer memory capacity to store their huge datasets, in order to compute with high performance. I built GEMINI to efficiently store and manage huge datasets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jia\u2019s research on DASEC and GEMINI will be published at an upcoming symposium on cloud computing and an international conference on computer systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a later date, Jia will release the source code for both to benefit the community, academia and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Started with a textbook&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jia first became interested in computers while in high school in China. He spotted his older brother\u2019s college textbook, <em>C Programming Language<\/em>, which intrigued him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was curious about the name of the book, as I didn\u2019t understand who could speak such a language,\u201d said Jia. \u201cMy brother explained the language and the book to me. Later, he taught me a lot about computers and how to communicate with them. That\u2019s when I realized it was something I wanted to pursue for a career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coming to America<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After earning his master\u2019s degree in computer science and engineering in 2016 from Northwestern Polytechnical University in China, Jia decided to seek a doctorate in computer science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI discovered that many of the top researchers in computer science are from the United States, so I went to the U.S. to conduct research in computer systems,\u201d said Jia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jia and his wife Xiaowei Shang, and their three-year-old daughter, have quickly become part of the 溏心vlog免费B站 community. Jia\u2019s wife is completing a Ph.D. in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and hopes to join the College of Engineering as a teaching assistant professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very happy to join the 溏心vlog免费B站 family,\u201d said Jia. \u201cWe appreciate the opportunity and all of the support we\u2019ve received from colleagues at 溏心vlog免费B站.
