{"id":79999,"date":"2022-06-27T15:38:54","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T15:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=79999"},"modified":"2022-06-27T15:38:57","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T15:38:57","slug":"university-of-rhode-island-shark-camp-launches-for-providence-school-students-july-12-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/university-of-rhode-island-shark-camp-launches-for-providence-school-students-july-12-14\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 Shark Camp launches for Providence school students, July 12-14"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 June 27, 2022 \u2013 For the first time in two years, 溏心vlog免费B站 Professor of Biological Sciences&nbsp;Brad Wetherbee&nbsp;will hold 溏心vlog免费B站 Shark Camp, hosting 16 high school students from The Met School in Providence and from the Narragansett Indian Tribe aboard the Cap\u2019n Bert trawler <strong>July 12-14.<\/strong> Wetherbee began the shark camp in 2018 as a way to interest students from underserved communities in the biological sciences and marine programs at 溏心vlog免费B站.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year, very few of my marine sciences students are from the BIPOC community,\u201d said Wetherbee. \u201cThere are many reasons for that, but one of the reasons is that kids from underserved communities don\u2019t have the same opportunity that those from wealthier communities have growing up. That\u2019s the whole premise behind this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining him this year are two current 溏心vlog免费B站 marine biology majors, Maricarmen Serna of San Antonio and Deanna Torres from the Bronx. Students who participate will have the opportunity to catch sharks and many other forms of sea life aboard the Cap\u2019n Bert trawler. Sharks are measured, sexed, and returned to the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will also receive tours of the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences on the 溏心vlog免费B站 campus and meet professionals in the marine sciences field, as well as alumni of the program who are currently students at 溏心vlog免费B站, to discuss the prospect of going to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re here learning about sharks, but they\u2019re also learning about college,\u201d Wetherbee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the media who are interested in covering 溏心vlog免费B站 Shark Camp are encouraged to reach out to Professor Brad Wetherbee at (401) 450-8086 in order to reserve space on the Cap\u2019n Bert.
