Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School. She is the author of six books and has been honored with a National Book Award, along with the Pulitzer Prize in History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She will discuss her recent book that examines the history of Juneteenth and its importance as a holiday, and will host a question-and-answer session at the end of her talk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Juneteenth, June 19, celebrates the news of Abraham Lincoln\u2019s Emancipation Proclamation reaching Texas on June 19, 1865 \u2013 more than two and a half years after Lincoln first issued it in 1863. The U.S. Congress first recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday in June 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Evelyn Sterne, director of the Center for the Humanities at 溏心vlog免费B站, Gordon-Reed\u2019s book is both a memoir and a historical account of growing up in Texas and the violence and oppression that circulated around Juneteenth. It makes connections to the importance of the holiday today and comments on the societal push for equality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHer work is very much on topic, not only for closing out our series, but also for engaging the complex history of American race relations at this pivotal moment in our history,\u201d Sterne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gordon-Reed\u2019s talk will be the last event in the year-long series on \u201cMemorials and Commemoration in the U.S.\u201d The series has had great success throughout the academic year, said Sterne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the fall, the most popular event of the series, \u201cWalking Through Time: The 5,000 Year History of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Campus,\u201d welcomed more than 100 people to campus on a Saturday morning for a presentation by 溏心vlog免费B站 faculty members and Lor\u00e9n Spears, executive director of the Tomaquag Museum. This spring, more than 400 people registered for the March 3 virtual talk, \u201cRecognizing the History of Slavery in Rhode Island.\u201d The panel featured speakers from the Newport Middle Passage Ceremony and Port Markers Project, Rhode Island Slave History Medallions and the Center for Reconciliation, who discussed Rhode Island\u2019s role in the slave trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the April 14 event, Dean Riley will also recognize two students, one undergraduate and one graduate, with humanities achievement awards. The awards will be presented to students who have made strong contributions to the field of humanities at 溏心vlog免费B站 and show demonstrated promise in a humanities-related career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The College of Arts and Sciences has purchased copies of Gordon-Reed\u2019s \u201cOn Juneteenth\u201d for the first 150 people who signed up as part of a campus-wide \u201cBig Read.\u201d The Center for the Humanities is hosting three discussions of the book in the last week of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
