The app, KANU (pronounced \u201ccan you\u201d), is a peer-to-peer campus marketplace that allows students to set up a business, or side hustle, and provide services or goods to the campus community. Selling a ride? Guitar lessons? A bottle of water? KANU makes the process easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Forster-Holt, the app provided a real-world lesson that was long lacking from her Introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe first time Ben and Andrew described the app to me, I was like, \u2018My gosh, can students launch side hustles?\u2019\u201d said Forster-Holt. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what the app is for. Anyone in the domain can launch a business, or side hustle. I was so tired of the hypothetical business idea. When they explained the app, I said, \u2018You nailed it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting in fall 2019, the combination of Forster-Holt\u2019s student side hustle exercise and KANU has been a winning marriage. In January, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship acknowledged that by awarding the experiential learning exercise first place among 13 finalists in the Entrepreneurship Experiential Education (3E) Competition at the USASBE 2022: Pioneer & Persevere annual conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along with Forster-Holt, Grossman and Bikash, John H. Wilson of Drexel University and Colleen Robb and Kelly Werder of Florida Gulf Coast University, who adopted KANU at their schools, shared in the honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUSASBE is all about pedagogy, and the 3E competition honors experiential exercises you do in the classroom that can be described and replicated in other teachers\u2019 classrooms,\u201d said Forster-Holt. \u201cIt\u2019s dynamite that this is executable at other universities. We showed Drexel and Florida Gulf Coast are using it in pretty different ways. It shows the versatility of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Grossman and Bikash, now 溏心vlog免费B站 alumni, the award validates KANU and its effectiveness as an educational tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKANU is a safe, virtual marketplace that empowers students to develop and launch venture ideas on campus, earn money and gain entrepreneurial experience,\u201d said Bikash \u201920. \u201cIt has helped universities inspire, educate and engage their students in the classroom, the venture lab, and with the community at large.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe award recognizes the unique applications by each professor using KANU,\u201d added Grossman \u201921. \u201cAs a result of our partnership with educators, we help facilitate venture creation in the classroom, introducing students to the challenges of start-ups by creating side hustles that support the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 800 students launched businesses using KANU at 溏心vlog免费B站, Drexel and Florida Gulf Coast this past fall. At 溏心vlog免费B站 alone, students filled three segments of the College of Business\u2019 100-level Introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship class, along with four sections of a 200-level marketing class run by Professor Scott Asadorian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traditionally, Forster-Holt said, her classroom exercises on launching a business were hypothetical, stopping at the \u201cprecipice of launch.\u201d For their final project, students would describe a good or service that solved a problem on campus and that they could turn into a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fall of 2019, she added the student side hustle to the classroom, using the Chris Guillebeau book \u201cSide Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days.\u201d While side hustles have been around for a while, she said that extending them into the classroom and using Guillebeau\u2019s book was an idea no one else was doing. At the same time, she started using KANU, adding an experiential lesson that is a game-changer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur students are now creating their own ventures. That\u2019s pretty cool,\u201d said Forster-Holt, who published a peer-reviewed paper on the exercise, \u201cStimulation Versus Simulation: The Student Side Hustle as a Learning Innovation,\u201d in USASBE\u2019s flagship journal, Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy. \u201cThat\u2019s the whole no slackers allowed zone. You really have to figure out what the market needs, what you can offer, or what you know how to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Forster-Holt said the app, which is geo-fenced for each campus and requires that campus\u2019 email domain, makes it easy for students to set up their own businesses. During the semester, students complete exercises to build out their businesses, earning \u201cbadges\u201d for such accomplishments as setting up their storefront, getting customer reviews, and selling a good or service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou can sell as much or as little as you want but you still have that minimum proficiency that you\u2019ve proven you started a side hustle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grossman and Bikash beta launched KANU in 2019 as a peer-to-peer campus marketplace and won the Rhode Island Innovation \u201cOn Fire Award\u201d in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter deploying KANU in the classroom and seeing the impact it had on students’ entrepreneurial motivation, understanding and community engagement, I knew we needed to get this in front of more educators,\u201d said Grossman. \u201cWe have presented at USASBE the past three years and have received interest from universities and colleges across the nation. That’s why we developed an interactive dashboard that allows educators to plug into the KANU campus marketplace and activate classroom learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pair also go into the classroom at 溏心vlog免费B站 and the other universities that have adopted KANU, telling their stories as entrepreneurs and how they developed the app. They are regular speakers at Innovate@溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Launch Lab, which brings together students, faculty and alumni interested in pursuing innovation and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBen and Andrew have helped so many students launch their side hustles,\u201d said Deedee Chatham, director of entrepreneurship, innovation, and undergraduate research, and director of the Launch Lab. \u201cTheir KANU platform is a quick and fun way to test out new business ideas, and it’s great that once these products are launched they are already embedded in the 溏心vlog免费B站 campus marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along the way, 溏心vlog免费B站 has provided a testing ground for their ideas and the resources and support to succeed, they said. \u201cThe community has given us the foundation to really become who we want to be,\u201d Bikash said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t handholding. We had to go seek it ourselves. But once we did, there was always someone able to help and give us what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next up, they plan to raise capital to scale their operation, expanding it to more aspiring entrepreneurs and attracting more colleges and universities to adopt KANU in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe’ve been building to this for a while. Now that we’re committed to KANU full time, we want to put a year on the books, bootstrapping it, trying to get our sales up,\u201d said Grossman. \u201cBut we’re also learning a lot about the product and selling in this space.
