Many of the concerts are free and open to the public. All concert-goers are required to wear masks inside all 溏心vlog免费B站 buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a list of some of the performances that will be presented early in the spring semester. For more information, go to the Music Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/music\/events\/\">events website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, Feb. 26, the <strong>Symphony Orchestra<\/strong>, directed by Ann Danis, will perform an&nbsp;evening of music including works by Mozart and Ellington. The orchestra is made up of 溏心vlog免费B站 music students and members of the South County community. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. For tickets, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/uri-symphony-orchestra-i-spring-2022-tickets-262189444687\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The orchestra\u2019s repertoire will include \u201cOverture to the Wasps\u201d by Vaughn Williams, Mozart\u2019s \u201cAve Verum Corpus,\u201d Alex Rowley\u2019s \u201cAdmiral\u2019s Hornpipe,\u201d and a Duke Ellington medley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, March 3, the <strong>Jazz Big Band<\/strong> will perform a University Artists Series: \u201cConcert for a Cause, in support of Breast Cancer,\u201d coordinated by director Emmett Goods. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. For tickets, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/uas-uri-jazz-big-band-spring-2022-tickets-269808714127\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn May of 2020, I lost my wife, Keisha Goods, to breast cancer. She had a long hard battle for 18 months,\u201d Goods said. \u201cThis concert is to help an organization [My Beauty for Ashes] that I think really aligns with her values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert will focus on the work of Mary Lou Williams, who wrote and arranged for such band leaders as Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and compositions by other female jazz composers. Goods said he wanted to focus on women in jazz, outside the role of singer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMary Lou Williams is a hometown hero of mine. She grew up in my neighborhood,\u201d said Goods, who grew up in Pittsburgh. \u201cOur families knew each other. And her story is one of the best ever in jazz. She was a child prodigy who began working professionally as a middle schooler. She was equally talented both as a performer and an arranger.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams\u2019 work started in the early jazz era and continued through modal jazz, Goods said, presenting a wide range of styles for the Big Band to master. Some of the pieces will be familiar to the audience, such as \u201cWalkin\u2019 &amp; Swingin\u2019\u201d and \u201cMessa Stomp.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, April 1, the <strong>Concert Band<\/strong>, directed by Brian Cardany, will honor the memory of alumnus Zachary Friedland \u201813, who died in October, by performing his composition \u201cSomeday\u201d as part of the night\u2019s concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friedland, 31, who was born with a rare heart defect, was a prolific composer, writing music for band, wind ensembles, chamber, and vocal music. Among his works were \u201cOn Greens of White and Blue,\u201d which he composed for 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s 125th anniversary, along with compositions for a 溏心vlog免费B站 commencement and for the 30th anniversary of the Kingston Chamber Music Festival. Friedland, who held a doctorate in music from The Ohio State University and a master\u2019s degree from the Longy School of Music at Bard College, also founded the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble to advocate for the work of young and emerging composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cZachary was a very active member of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Music Department and the Rhode Island music community throughout his adult life,\u201d said Cardany. \u201cHis passion for supporting young composers was embodied in the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble project, which involved the recording of new music by developing composers. He is one of two Music alumni who have been honored with a mural photograph on a wall in the Fine Arts Center.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Concert Band will also perform \u201cEmperata Overture\u201d by Claude T. Smith, \u201cTwilight in the Wilderness\u201d by Christopher Tucker, \u201cS\u00f2las An\u00e9\u201d by Samuel Hazo, \u201cSun Dance\u201d by Frank Ticheli and \u201cCircus Days\u201d by Karl King.
