  {"id":78236,"date":"2021-11-24T14:18:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T14:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=78236"},"modified":"2021-12-07T17:30:28","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T17:30:28","slug":"uri-undergraduates-develop-napnea-system-to-monitor-infant-breathing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2021\/11\/uri-undergraduates-develop-napnea-system-to-monitor-infant-breathing\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 undergraduates develop Napnea system to monitor infant breathing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Nov. 24, 2021 \u2013 Infant apnea is defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics as &#8220;an unexplained episode of cessation of breathing for 20 seconds or longer, or a shorter respiratory pause associated with bradycardia, cyanosis, pallor, and\/or marked hypotonia.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While infant apnea is very rarely fatal, it is frightening to the observer, and some theories even link it to sudden infant death syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afnan Altekreeti, a&nbsp;senior studying <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/\">biomedical engineering<\/a> at the 溏心vlog免费B站, has been working with her peers Michaela Roberts and Dan Convey on a project called, Napnea, which is a neonatal apnea detection system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-868x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78241\" width=\"285\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-868x1024.jpg 868w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-768x906.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-364x430.jpg 364w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-500x590.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti-1000x1180.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/Altekreeti.jpg 1220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><figcaption>Afnan Altekreeti, 溏心vlog免费B站 biomedical engineering student<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is a continuation of a senior capstone design project Sarah Leighton and Madeline Seater worked on last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Napnea is an electronic textile-based respiration monitoring system consisting of a soft electronic textile chest belt that is integrated with a force sensor and a computing system to monitor respiration, periodic breathing and apnea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Napnea system shows promise to be a cost-effective, user-friendly method to monitor respiration and apnea,&#8221; said Altekreeti. &#8220;The system addresses real-world, time-sensitive health data for our population\u2019s most vulnerable infants.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altekreeti, Roberts and Convey have been conducting their research&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Wearable Biosensing Laboratory&nbsp;under the guidance of Associate Professor&nbsp;Kunal Mankodiya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There have been many obstacles to overcome and many late nights working in the lab,&#8221; said Altekreeti, who lives in <strong>Warwick<\/strong>. &#8220;One technical challenge we faced was the results of the respiration simulator not being 100% accurate at first.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another challenge has been preparing to present the project at an international conference in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 16-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t learn about the opportunity to attend the conference until a few weeks before the deadline, making it difficult for us to put together a proposal in a short time frame,&#8221; said Altekreeti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/conferences.computer.org\/chase2021\/\">Conference on Connected Health: Applications, Systems and Engineering Technologies<\/a> is co-hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altekreeti received a $600 award from the National Science Foundation to cover the expenses of attending the conference.
