2021-2022 season<\/a> will feature \u201cClue: On Stage,\u201d based on the 1985 film that was in turn based on the Hasbro whodunit board game. The spring brings Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d and the L. Frank Baum classic, \u201cThe Wizard of Oz,\u201d to the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe season will also feature three directors new to 溏心vlog免费B站 Theatre in the first three plays. New Lecturer Tracy Liz Miller heads \u201cSilent Sky,\u201d Don Mays, formerly of Providence\u2019s Wilbury Theatre, leads \u201cClue,\u201d and former Trinity Rep director Tyler Dobrowsky helms \u201cTwelfth Night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lauren Gunderson\u2019s 2015 play, \u201cSilent Sky,\u201d which was originally planned for last season, is the true story of Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow women \u201ccomputers\u201d at Harvard Observatory in the 1890s. Years before women gained the vote, the \u201ccomputers\u201d charted the stars while, on earth, their ideas were dismissed or stolen by men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a story about hope, comradery and believing,\u201d Howard said. \u201cWhat\u2019s really interesting about it is, even though it\u2019s about physics and things that none of us can understand, it re-envisions how we perceive those things so we can start to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The play will have a cast of just five actors. During rehearsals, all members of the company have been required to be regularly tested for COVID-19, along with following all University guidelines. The play will be staged in J-Studio, 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s black box theater, which will be limited to 140 seats, about 110 under capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf the University tells us we can only have 50 percent capacity, we can change to 50 percent. If they say you can only have 20 people in the room, we will put 20 people in the room,\u201d Howard said. \u201cI promised the cast we will have an audience. If it\u2019s eight people, we will run it for eight people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In December, \u201cClue: On Stage,\u201d by Sandy Rustin based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn, will provide silly fun as audiences try to deduce who killed Boddy Manor. Was it Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, or Mustard? \u201cClue\u201d opens Dec. 2 in the Will Theatre, a 500-seat theater that will allow for greater ability to space patrons out if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To start the second half of the season, \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d will open in J-Studio on March 3. The play tells the tale of twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated by a shipwreck on Illyria. Viola disguises herself as the Duke\u2019s manservant. She falls in love with him, while he falls for Countess Olivia, who in turn falls in love with Viola thinking she\u2019s a man. \u201cThis wonderful, touching, raucous, sad, emotional play has so much heart,\u201d Howard said. \u201cWhen it\u2019s funny, it\u2019s the funniest thing that was ever written. But then it also touches you in ways that even \u2018Hamlet\u2019 can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following tradition, the season will wrap up with a musical, annually one of the department\u2019s most popular shows, especially with families. \u201cThe Wizard of Oz,\u201d which opens April 21, will feature all of the classic music \u2013 by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg \u2013 from the 1939 movie. While 溏心vlog免费B站 Theatre has performed the \u201cOz\u201d remake, \u201cThe Wiz,\u201d it\u2019s the first time the department will stage the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI look at all these plays as being about paths to discovery,\u201d Howard said. \u201cBut also, they transport us in a way you can\u2019t find on Netflix with your dog barking at you or your kids yelling at you. We\u2019re hoping that all of these plays are so exciting and inspirational that it allows theater to do what it does best \u2013 bring people somewhere they\u2019ve never been before, meet people they\u2019ve never met, and feel like they\u2019re sharing the same air, the same space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
