  {"id":76216,"date":"2021-05-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/intern-collaborates-on-uri-engineering-project-from-puerto-rico\/"},"modified":"2021-05-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T00:00:00","slug":"intern-collaborates-on-uri-engineering-project-from-puerto-rico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/intern-collaborates-on-uri-engineering-project-from-puerto-rico\/","title":{"rendered":"Intern collaborates on 溏心vlog免费B站 engineering project from Puerto Rico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 May 14, 2021 \u2013 If there&#8217;s a positive outcome from remote learning during the last year, it&#8217;s that students and professors have become adept at sharing information and collaborating on projects while physically apart.<\/p>\n<p>Using several forms of communication, Adriana Mu\u00f1oz-Soto is completing a yearlong internship with 溏心vlog免费B站 Assistant Professor Brennan Phillips while attending school at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayag\u00fcez.<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1oz-Soto was one of the three students, along with 溏心vlog免费B站 ocean engineering students Nicholas Chaloux and Russell Shomberg, to assist Phillips in developing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uri.edu\/news\/compact-deployment-system-makes-exploring-deep-seas-easier\/\">fiber optic reel system<\/a>, which is the smallest deep-sea system in the world that can provide a livestream video feed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After reading about the project, I was immediately interested in the opportunity since it was aligned with the field I&#8217;m pursuing,&#8221; said Mu\u00f1oz-Soto, who was finishing her\u00a0third year of a bachelor&#8217;s degree in mechanical engineering when she accepted the internship in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making the Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1oz-Soto connected with Phillips through\u00a0the\u00a0National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/office-education\/epp-msi\/undergraduate-scholarship\">Educational Partnership Program<\/a>\u00a0for Minority Serving Institutions program, which provides two years of funding\u00a0and two summer internships with NOAA\u00a0to rising juniors who are majoring in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field and attending a Minority Serving Institution, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58992\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/AMunoz-2020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-58992 no-hang \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/AMunoz-2020.jpg\" alt=\"Adriana Mu\u00f1oz-Soto worked on the design for the fiber optic reel system \" width=\"355\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using three screens at once, Adriana Mu\u00f1oz-Soto worked on the design for the fiber optic reel system from her home in Puerto Rico. She helped facilitate the connection between the student and the professor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I learned of Adriana&#8217;s\u00a0interests, I reached out to Brennan to see if he had a project she could work on for a 10-week summer internship last year,&#8221; said Martinez, a 溏心vlog免费B站 alumna who has managed a <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\">NOAA Ocean Exploration<\/a> office at 溏心vlog免费B站 since 2004. &#8220;They created an incredibly effective way to work remotely together. Through the success of the collaboration, we were able to keep the relationship going throughout the school year and now into the summer of 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using Technology to Communicate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phillips and Mu\u00f1oz-Soto communicated mainly through email, video conferencing and Slack, which is a software platform used for project management.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When starting a new design, video conferencing was preferred for me to fully grasp the details and purpose of the piece,&#8221; Mu\u00f1oz-Soto said. &#8220;As the design progressed, email and Slack were used for commentary, photo updates, changes that needed to be made, advice and any questions I had. Photo courtesy of Catalina Martinez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Starting last June, Adriana and I iterated on design concepts for the fishing reel system, specifically the underwater \u2018payload,\u2019&#8221; said Phillips. &#8220;I would draw on a whiteboard in front of a camera, she would take notes and ask questions over Zoom, and then she would send me designs for me to review. Once they were finalized, I 3D-printed them here at 溏心vlog免费B站. In some cases, Adriana operated the printers remotely from Puerto Rico, which was pretty cool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Toward the end of the summer in 2020, Phillips and Martinez used Zoom to enable\u00a0Mu\u00f1oz-Soto to watch a field test of the fiber optic reel system in the Narrow River.\u00a0Phillips propped his cell phone up on the bow of his boat in his shoe, while\u00a0Martinez live streamed the test using her cell\u00a0phone from a second boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continuing In-Person<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After working with Phillips remotely for almost a full year, Mu\u00f1oz-Soto will finally get to work with the professor in person this summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re so happy that Adriana can actually come this summer for an in-person internship session at 溏心vlog免费B站,&#8221; Phillips said. &#8220;She&#8217;ll arrive on June 1 and join my lab for a field expedition to Bermuda in early July. She&#8217;ll continue to work on the fiber optic reel system, help run it herself, and get some valuable experience along the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1oz-Soto is looking forward to physically working with the equipment that she helped design remotely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll continue to focus on the mechanical design of the project while field testing the different prototypes we designed throughout the school year,&#8221; said Mu\u00f1oz-Soto. &#8220;We&#8217;ll determine if any modifications are needed or if we may continue to the next phase of design, since the final goal is for a payload to be deployed by an aerial drone with no need for vessel or human interaction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals for the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1oz-Soto expects to earn her bachelor&#8217;s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico in May or December of 2022. After that, she would like to attend graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am interested in pursuing a master\u2019s degree in product design\/innovation, where I can combine my interests of engineering, design and entrepreneurship and see where that path takes me in my career,&#8221; said Mu\u00f1oz-Soto.<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1oz-Soto hasn\u2019t decided where she would like to attend graduate school, but said she would consider 溏心vlog免费B站.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is a program related to the specific field I would like to enter, I would be interested,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz-Soto said.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips is confident that Munoz-Soto\u00a0has the skills to become a highly successful engineer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adriana is extremely bright, mature and hard-working,&#8221; said Phillips. &#8220;I have been continually impressed with her ability to learn quickly, grasp new concepts and adapt as we iterate on designs.
