That&#8217;s about to change.<\/p>\n<p>Brennan Phillips, 溏心vlog免费B站 assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/oce\/\">ocean engineering<\/a>, has made significant advancements in the field of soft robotic grippers that can be used to gently grasp these obscure creatures.<\/p>\n<p>While on an expedition off the coast of\u00a0Honolulu, Hawaii from Oct. 12-17, Phillips, two of his students from 溏心vlog免费B站, and\u00a0colleagues from other universities and research centers, tested soft grippers and other research equipment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55650\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/PhillipsEquipmentTesting-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55650 no-hang \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/PhillipsEquipmentTesting-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Brennan Phillips makes adjustments to the team's equipment \" width=\"450\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">溏心vlog免费B站&#8217;s Brennan Phillips makes adjustments to the team&#8217;s equipment on the ROV SuBastian. Photo by Alex Ingle\/SOI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This mission was focused on technology development for midwater exploration,&#8221; said Phillips. &#8220;Our\u00a0primary focus was to experiment with various soft robotic grippers, using a new deep-ocean hydraulic system. We also tested some new miniature deep-sea cameras, which were invented at 溏心vlog免费B站 and have a wide range of undersea applications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0work was conducted aboard the research vessel\u00a0<em>Falkor<\/em>, a state-of-the-art, 271-foot oceanographic vessel. Use of the ship and the\u00a0remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian was provided by\u00a0the\u00a0Schmidt Ocean Institute. Collaborating with the 溏心vlog免费B站 team were researchers from\u00a0Harvard University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks\u00a0to the hard work of the science party, the ROV team, and the vessel crew, the\u00a0trip was a complete success,&#8221; Phillips said. &#8220;All of our new systems were demonstrated to work at depths of up to 1,200 meters and we are very pleased with the results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The two ocean engineering students from Phillips&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/uril\/\">Underwater Robotics and Imaging Laboratory<\/a> who joined the professor on the trip were\u00a0Russell Shomberg from Newport, Rhode Island and\u00a0Brendan Unikewicz from Portland, Connecticut. Shomberg is pursuing a master&#8217;s degree and\u00a0Unikewicz is working toward his doctorate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed oembed-youtube-com\" style=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JLxUHOkM1k0&#038;feature=emb_logo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Designing the Future - Wrap-Up Video - FK191012\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JLxUHOkM1k0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Russ is the lead on the soft robotic drive system we were testing and Brendan is gaining experience with work-class ROV\u2019s,&#8221; said Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Shomberg co-developed the new deep-ocean hydraulic system with Stephen Licht, 溏心vlog免费B站 associate professor of ocean engineering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to see our soft robotic hydraulic drive function on an integrated ROV system and test out the new features on the latest iteration of the DEEPi camera system,&#8221; said Shomberg. &#8220;Our systems performed well, while still having room for improvement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the day, Shomberg and Unikewicz spent their time building and testing equipment. At night, they discussed modifications and improvements to the systems with other members of the research team.<\/p>\n<p>The students found the experience and interaction with other researchers at sea invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0Harvard engineers challenged us to build a drive system to handle their more exotic soft manipulators and the ROV pilots shared with us the challenges of working in a deep-sea environment,&#8221; said Shomberg. &#8220;That&#8217;s something we would have never experienced in a lab.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While no species were collected on the expedition, quite a few were viewed.\u00a0Over the course of six ROV dives, the Monterey Bay Institute\u2019s Deep Particle Image Velocimitry system was used to scan a number biological &#8220;targets,&#8221; including deep-sea jellyfish, ctenophores, siphonophores and glass sponges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the coolest things we saw was a cubozoan, or box jellyfish, at a depth of 600 meters. These can be extremely venomous,&#8221; said Phillips. &#8220;We also used our soft robotic gripping system to gently pick up xenophyophores, which are very delicate single-celled organisms that can be very challenging to collect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The objectives and accomplishments of the expedition were depicted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JLxUHOkM1k0&amp;feature=emb_logo\">YouTube video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research in Hawaii sets the stage for an even more ambitious trip next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have another, longer expedition scheduled onboard the\u00a0<em>Falkor<\/em>\u00a0in late 2020 that will apply these technologies on an exploration mission to a rarely-visited area in the Western Pacific,&#8221; stated Phillips.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 December 3, 2019 \u2013 Despite great technological advances in ocean exploration over the last 30 years, the world&#8217;s most delicate deep-sea species largely remain a mystery.
