They were encouraged by their teachers to celebrate the life of Gandhi and to think critically about his lessons of peaceful tolerance and nonviolence.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2010, more than 1,000 students have submitted essays based on quotes from Gandhi\u2019s work and life. All Rhode Island 8<sup>th<\/sup> graders were eligible to participate in this educational contest.
