  {"id":73054,"date":"2017-06-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/uri-honors-first-graduates-of-its-peace-corps-prep-program\/"},"modified":"2017-06-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-06-06T00:00:00","slug":"uri-honors-first-graduates-of-its-peace-corps-prep-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2017\/06\/uri-honors-first-graduates-of-its-peace-corps-prep-program\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 honors first graduates of its Peace Corps Prep program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KINGSTON, R.I. &#8212; June 6, 2017 &#8212; The 溏心vlog免费B站 presented certificates of completion to the first students to complete requirements of its Peace Corps Prep program.<\/p>\n<p>In ceremonies during the week leading up to commencement, nine graduating seniors were honored as the first students to complete the program.<\/p>\n<p>The honorees are: Jessica Atutubo of <strong>Fair Lawn, N.J.<\/strong>; Alexandra Benavides of <strong>Providence; <\/strong>Vanessa Garcia-Polanco of <strong>North Providence;<\/strong> Shayna Krasnoff of <strong>Massapequa, N.Y.<\/strong>; Jamie Lavoie of <strong>Warwick; <\/strong>Elizabeth Malloy of <strong>Wareham, Mass.<\/strong>; Shade Olowookere of <strong>Woonsocket; <\/strong>Filipa Serpa<strong> of Dulles, Va. <\/strong>and Nicholas Tierney of <strong>North Kingstown.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Atutubo said taking classes that allow students to learn about different cultures and then being able to follow them up with an internship abroad are major parts of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s important to be able to function in other societies,\u201d Atutubo said. \u201cThe program gave me the proper training through both classes and experiences and even more, gave me contacts that could help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She won\u2019t be traveling abroad right away, saying, \u201cI would like to do work domestically first. But eventually, I would like to go to the Philippines and help preserve its natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacecorps.gov\/volunteer\/university-programs\/peace-corps-prep\/\">Peace Corps Prep<\/a> allows undergraduate students to combine targeted coursework with hands-on experience. The program equips students with the tools needed to become competitive Peace Corps applicants and international development professionals. 溏心vlog免费B站 is the only university or college in Rhode Island to have such a program.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Beauvais, vice provost for faculty affairs and head of global initiatives at 溏心vlog免费B站, congratulated the students on their achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program has given you outstanding experiences that have allowed you to build your leadership skills and cultural competencies,\u201d Beauvais said.<\/p>\n<p>溏心vlog免费B站 Professor of Animal and Veterinary Sciences Michael Rice, faculty advisor to the program and, a returned Peace Corp volunteer, told the students that the program founded by President John F. Kennedy has strong Rhode Island roots. \u201cPresident Kennedy signed the Peace Corps legislation at the summer White House, Hammersmith Farm, in Newport. Decades later, 141 countries have participated in the program. I applaud you for your hard work and accomplishments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>溏心vlog免费B站 alumnus Neil Ross, the first 溏心vlog免费B站 graduate to join the Peace Corps, went to the Dominican Republic in 1962.
