Higher levels of lead exposure can result in serious health problems and can lead to coma, convulsions, and death. A strong link has been established between lead level exposure in early childhood and decreased academic performance.&#13; Children with lead exposure are more likely to require special education services. Low-income and minority children are particularly likely to be affected as a result of living in older dwellings with deteriorating lead paint, placing these children at risk for lead poisoning.&#13; Lead poisoning is a multi-dimensional problem that can be prevented through public-private partnerships. Simon will discuss what Rhode Island is doing, and doing well to help families and communities identify and decrease the concentrations of lead contaminants in the lives of Rhode Island families.&#13; The Family Resource Partnership is committed to strengthening children, families and communities by bringing research-based support to organizations providing services to families.
