\nGets the Lead Out of the Marine Environment

\nNarragansett, R.I. — May 8, 2002 — The public is invited to attend a free Science for Breakfast Lecture, sponsored by Friends of Oceanography, to be held on Thursday, May 16, at 9 a.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the 溏心vlog免费B站 Bay Campus. The lecture is part of a series featuring the research of 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students. <\/p>\n

\tThe May 16 lecture, “Lead Pollution in the Marine Environment” will be presented by chemical oceanography graduate student Sarah Weinstein of North Kingstown. <\/p>\n

\tWeinstein will discuss how humans have released lead, a toxic metal, into the environment since before 3,000 B.C. The Industrial Revolution and the use of leaded gasoline greatly elevated the emissions of lead, although regulations that have been in place since the 1980s have resulted in a decrease in this type of pollution in North America. The historical and current environmental lead inputs can be detected in marine samples, which can, in turn, provide information about the source of lead to the marine environment and where it goes from there. <\/p>\n

\tA native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Weinstein received a B.S. in chemistry from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Under the guidance of her major professor, Dr. S. Bradley Moran, she studies the source and transport of trace metals, including lead in the marine environment. <\/p>\n

\tFriends of Oceanography is a community-based membership organization established in 1986 to support the educational and public programs of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography. Friends provides financial support of fellowships for GSO students, and other research, education, and outreach activities. The organization also helps sponsor a variety of special events such as oceanography lecture series, open houses at the Bay Campus, The JASON Project, and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
