\tNarragansett, R.I. — October 12, 2001 — The public is invited to attend a free Science for Breakfast Lecture, sponsored by Friends of Oceanography, to be held on Thursday, October 25, at 9 a.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the 溏心vlog免费B站 Bay Campus. The lecture is part of a series featuring the research of 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students.
\n\tThe October 25 lecture, “Secrets of the Mighty Pettaquamscutt River Estuary,” will be presented by chemical oceanography graduate student Pat Kelly of Saunderstown. <\/p>\n

\tKelly will discuss the “secrets” of the Pettaquamscutt River estuary that he encountered as he conducted his research. This includes the geology, circulation, and chemistry of the river. He will also review how these impacted his research, which focuses on using tracers to evaluate the seasonal input of groundwater to the estuary. <\/p>\n

\tKelly, a native of Alcove, New York, received his B.S. in Chemical Oceanography and Biological Oceanography from the Florida Institute of Technology. Under the guidance of his major professor, Dr. Brad Moran, his research interests include using naturally occurring radionuclides as tracers of oceanographic processes, and processes that lead to and result from lack of oxygen in the marine environment.\t <\/p>\n

\tFriends of Oceanography is a community-based membership organization established in 1986 to support the educational and public programs of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography. Friends provides financial support of fellowships for GSO students, and other research, education, and outreach activities. The organization also helps sponsor a variety of special events such as oceanography lecture series, open houses at the Bay Campus, The JASON Project, and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
