\nNarragansett, R.I. — May 1, 2003 — Earlier this week students from Cranston High School West became the best in the country as they beat out competitors from all over the country at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl in LaJolla, California. Cranston West earned the right to travel to the national competition by winning the Connecticut and Rhode Island regional tournament in March at the äçÐÄvlogÃâ·ÑBÕ¾ Graduate School of Oceanography. <\/p>\n

\tThe team of dedicated high school students has been working together since last August to prepare for the event. The Cranston West students include Nicole Stockley, gr. 12; Greg Shumchenia, gr. 12; Patrick McMillen, gr. 11; Timothy Hanly, gr. 11; and Brittany Jaswell, gr. 11. The students were guided and coached by Cranston West teacher Steve Krous. <\/p>\n

\tDuring the national tournament, the competition was fierce. The Cranston West team tied for first place in their round robin pool at 4-1. They lost in the first round of Double Elimination to Lincoln-Sudbury, Massachusetts, and then won the rest of their matches. They won the first final match by 57-53 to force a second final match which they won with a score of 47-25. The final standings were:

1st place\tCranston HS West
\n2nd place\tMission San Jose HS (CA)
\n3rd place\tWando HS (VA)
\n4th place\tLaJolla HS (CA)
\n <\/p>\n

\tFirst prize this year is a trip to Hawaii where the students will visit the “Big Island” and stay at the base of Mauna Kea, whose summit reaches to 13,796 feet. They will also hike to the Kilauea volcano and swim with wild dolphins courtesy of Dolphin Quest. <\/p>\n

\tPatterned after the National Science Bowl, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl was created in 1998 by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE) to provide a forum for students who excel in math and science to receive national recognition for their diligence and talent while broadening their awareness and understanding of the oceans.\n\t<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
