\nPeter Flinker to discuss “Suburban Edge” Jan. 30
\n
\nKINGSTON, R.I. — January 21, 2003 — Peter Flinker, the senior landscape architect at Dodson Associates who received a national award for his South County Design Manual, will kick off the 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s spring Community Planning and Landscape Architecture lecture series on Jan. 30. The theme for the series is Contested Landscapes. Flinker will discuss “The Suburban Edge\u2013Struggling to Maintain Place.” <\/p>\n

\tAll lectures in the series begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the White Hall auditorium on the Kingston Campus. They are free and open to the public. <\/p>\n

A graduate of Hope College and the University of Massachusetts, Flinker has served as principal designer and project manager on a wide variety of large-scale community planning and design projects. Locally, he provided technical planning assistance to promote sustainable development in the Pawcatuck River Watershed. <\/p>\n

He also conducted a review of development trends and growth regulations in South Kingstown, which led to revisions of regulations and a design manual for residential development. This guide helps small towns apply principles of sustainable design and smart growth, and was developed further into the report for which he received a national honor award in 2002 from the American Society of Landscape Architects. <\/p>\n

Thursday, Feb. 13 \u2013 Kenneth Helphand, a professor of landscape architecture at the University of Oregon, will discuss “Dreaming Gardens: Landscape Architecture and the Making of the Israeli Landscape.” Helphand is a distinguished scholar and teacher, <\/p>\n

an honorary member of the Israel Association of Landscape Architects, and the recipient of the 2001 Bradford Williams Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. This lecture is co-sponsored by the 溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Program and the Visiting Scholars Committee. <\/p>\n

\tThursday, March 20 \u2013 Elizabeth Mossop, director of Spackman and Mossop Landscape Architects in Sydney, Australia, will speak on “The Urban Edge \u2013 Integrating Parks and Roads into the Australian City.” An assistant professor of landscape architecture at Harvard University, Mossop and her firm have designed major park and roadway projects throughout Australia. <\/p>\n

\tThursday, April 17 \u2013 Alistair McIntosh, principal at the Watertown, Mass.-based Sasaki Associates, will address “The Water\u2019s Edge \u2013 Defining the Boundary.” Sasaki Associates is a multi-disciplinary design firm that has gained an international reputation for excellence in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, and planning. <\/p>\n
