\nNarragansett, R.I. — October 2, 2002 — The public is invited to attend a free Breakfast Lecture, sponsored by Friends of Oceanography, to be held on Thursday, October 17, at 9 a.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the 溏心vlog免费B站 Bay Campus. The lecture is part of a series featuring the research of 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students. <\/p>\n

\tThe October 17 lecture, “Mud, Bugs, and Wine: Leg 201 of the Ocean Drilling Program” will be presented by geological oceanography graduate student Kathryn Ford of Narragansett. <\/p>\n

\tLeg 201 was the first Ocean Drilling Program cruise dedicated to the examination of microbes (bugs) buried in oceanic sediment (mud). The 63-day, California to Chile research cruise examined microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles in both open-ocean sites and continental margin sites. It required a crossing of the equator (and associated celebrations) as well as a visit in the Galapagos Islands. Both the science and life-on-board will be discussed. Following the cruise, limited studies of Chiles fermented grape beverages (wine) were conducted and these preliminary results will also be presented. <\/p>\n

\tA native of Winchester, Massachusetts, Ford received a B.S. in biology\/geology from the University of Rochester, New York. Under the guidance of her major professor, Dr. John King, she studies the impacts of contamination and hurricanes in Rhode Island coastal ponds.

\tFriends of Oceanography is a community-based membership organization established in 1986 to support the educational and public programs of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography. Friends provides financial support of fellowships for GSO students, and other research, education, and outreach activities. The organization also helps sponsor a variety of special events such as oceanography lecture series, open houses at the Bay Campus, The JASON Project, and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
