\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. — September 5, 2002 — For two minutes on Sept. 11, the carillon chimes will ring on the 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Kingston Campus, and then the entire campus will become silent.
\n
\n\t“We\u2019d like people to stay off the phone, refrain from walking to class and hold off sending emails so that we can appropriately reflect on the tremendous loss of a year ago,” said Bruce Hamilton, director of 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Memorial Union and student activities.
\n
\n\tThe moment of silence and the ringing of bells will initiate 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Day of Remembrance to mark Sept. 11, 2001, the day terrorists flew jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing thousands. The program will also honor the memory of the passengers who overtook terrorists and forced a jet to the ground in the Pennsylvania. Other campus groups will conduct their own smaller ceremonies.

\nHamilton has been working with other members of the campus community since last spring to put a simple, dignified program together. Among those assisting have been Maureen Moakley, chair of the Political Science Department, the Rev. John Soares, Catholic chaplain; Chip Yensan, director of Housing and Residential Life; Michelle Nota, executive director of Alumni Relations; Harry Davis, assistant director of facilities and operations; and James Campbell, director of counseling.
\n
\n“We wanted to do something simple and poignant and allow people to deal with the day on their own terms,” Hamilton said. “But we also wanted to offer a variety of things during the day so that anyone who wanted to would be able to participate.”
\n
\nTo mark the first jet attack, the bells will begin ringing at 8:44 a.m. and the campus-wide moment of silence will begin at 8:46.
\n
\nFrom 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of the community will read the names of all those killed. Hamilton said he needs about 45 volunteers to read for 5 minutes each. (Those interested should email Hamilton with available times at hamilton@uri.edu )

\nThere is one event scheduled on Sept. 10, and the remaining program takes effect on Sept. 11.
\no Sept. 10, noon, Fine Arts Center Corridor Gallery, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, speaking about her show, “The Backlash in the Wake of Sept. 11.” Matthew will discuss her digital prints and text that explore xenophobia in Rhode Island following the attacks. Also in the Main Gallery, artist Barbara Pagh invites all visitors to contribute a comment about Sept. 11 on shredded paper in keeping with her medium. Her show is entitled “Stone Paper Circle.”
\no Sept. 11, noon “How are We Different?” A discussion led by Campbell and Galen Johnson, professor of philosophy, Memorial Union, Atrium 1.

\no Noon to 1:30 p.m., 溏心vlog免费B站 Providence Campus. “Finding Safety When the World Feels Unsafe: 9-11 Revisited, Sara Wye, licensed mental health counselor, and former broadcast and newspaper reporter.

\no 2:30 p.m. 溏心vlog免费B站 President Robert L. Carothers and Nota will unveil a Twin Towers print and plaque honoring those lost in the attacks, especially 溏心vlog免费B站 alumni: Lynn Edwards Angell, M.L.S. \u201977; Christine J. Barbuto, \u201990; Christian L. DeSimone \u201900; Michael G. McGinty, M.B.A. \u201991 and Frank Schott Jr., \u201983, Memorial Union Lobby.

\no 3:30 p.m. “Civil Liberties vs. National Security Post 9\/11,” hosted by the Political Science Department, Memorial Union, Atrium 1.
\n
\no 6:30 p.m. Wall of Hope unveiling at Providence\u2019s Waterplace Park, followed by mini-Waterfire at 7 p.m. Interfaith services at Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, 7:30 p.m. 溏心vlog免费B站 was a sponsor of the Wall of Hope, and hosted a day at the Kingston Campus when community members created their own tiles.

\no 6:30 p.m. Theater majors will participate in a candlelight vigil outside the Fine Arts Center, and department chair Paula McGlasson, will offer a few remarks.
\n
\no 7:30 p.m. 溏心vlog免费B站 students from residence halls, fraternities and sororities, and all interested community members will gather on Butterfield Road for a silent candlelight walk and vigil, up the Elephant Walk and ending on the Quadrangle.
\n
\n“Bruce and his group have put together a meaningful program that should help us all come to terms with the events of that horrible day,” Carothers said. “I would urge everyone in the 溏心vlog免费B站 community to participate in at least some portion of the program as we reflect on the complex mix of tragedy and heroism that played out in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in the blue skies over Pennsylvania.

\n“溏心vlog免费B站 lost five of its alumni in that carnage, as well as family members of current students. We honor those alumni and families by remembering them.”
