\nNarragansett, RI — July 23, 2002 — The volcanic eruptions we see on television show only the tip of the crater. What goes on beneath the surface of the ocean is just as spectacular and explosive, but much more frequent. The 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and the Naval War College Foundation invite the public to explore Volcanoes and the Ocean: The Meeting of Two Great Forces, a multi-media presentation given by GSO volcanologist Dr. Steve Carey. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, August 6, at 7 p.m. in Spruance Auditorium at the Naval War College in Newport. Science exhibits will be on view in the auditorium lobby prior to the lecture. <\/p>\n

\tFew people realize that the majority of volcanic activity on Earth actually takes place beneath the ocean. The mixing of red hot lava and cold seawater produces a broad spectrum of dynamic and dangerous interactions on the seafloor. In the deep ocean the heat from submarine volcanoes sustains exotic biological communities in normally inhospitable conditions. These communities are able to flourish despite the lack of light and extreme pressure. Closer to the surface, the mixing of magma and water can become extremely violent as new islands emerge above sea level or existing islands sink into the abyss. Carey\u2019s entertaining and dramatic lecture will explore how submarine volcanic eruptions impact the oceans and the people who live along their shores using examples from his research. <\/p>\n

\tCarey has been studying explosive volcanoes in the sea and the impact of their eruptions for more than 25 years. A 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography alumnus and resident of Saunderstown, Carey is an internationally recognized expert on explosive volcanism. During the past two decades he has studied volcanoes in 10 different countries including Mt. St. Helens in the US, Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, and Krakatau in Indonesia. He is active on committees of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth\u2019s Interior and is an assistant editor for the Bulletin of Volcanology. Carey has served on national committees for the Ocean Drilling Program and participated in numerous oceanographic expeditions.
