  {"id":70389,"date":"2004-09-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-09-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/uri-students-host-muslims-and-current-events-program\/"},"modified":"2004-09-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-09-16T00:00:00","slug":"uri-students-host-muslims-and-current-events-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2004\/09\/uri-students-host-muslims-and-current-events-program\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 students host \u2018Muslims and Current Events\u2019 program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. &#8212; September 16, 2004 &#8212; The 溏心vlog免费B站 Muslim Students Association is sponsoring a Muslim Outreach Program, \u201cMuslims and Current Events,\u201d on Saturday, Sept. 18 in the Memorial Union Ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n The program begins with dinner at 6 p.m. and a welcome given by <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nNasser Zawia, a professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cThe Muslim community here at 溏心vlog免费B站 wants to encourage greater understanding of Muslims and current events in the world,\u201d Zawia said.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cThe program will enhance people\u2019s understanding of what conflicts are going on in the world today, and how different powers use these for political gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tHe said the program will expose participants to a Muslim point of view, and information about other cultures. \u201cWe want to promote more understanding, because when there is more understanding, there is less animosity,\u201d Zawia said.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe schedule follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cIntroduction to Islam,\u201d at 7:10 p.m with Awadh A. Binhazim, professor of Islam at Vanderbilt University;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cBeyond Islam: What Americans need to understand about Muslim <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMovements,\u201d at 7:30 p.m with Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban, professor of <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nanthropology at Rhode Island College;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cIs There Really a Clash of Civilizations?\u201d with M. Shahid Alam, professor of economics at Northeastern University;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cIntercultural Understanding as a Basis for Ethnic and Religious Diversity,\u201d with Debbie Almontaser, coordinator of External Programs and Diversity, New York City Department of Education;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u2022 \u201cWhat Muslims Can Learn from the Civil Rights Movement,\u201d with Bernard LaFayette, Jr., director of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Center for Nonviolence and Peace <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nStudies.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tA question-and-answer period with the speakers will follow.
