\n\t\tNarragansett, R.I. — February 20, 2004 — For the seventh year in a row, the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) is proud to be the host of the Rhode Island and Connecticut regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). Dubbed the Quahog Bowl, the tournament will be held at the 溏心vlog免费B站 Narragansett Bay Campus on Saturday, February 28. <\/p>\n


\n\tThe teams representing 14 schools in Rhode Island and Connecticut will compete in team challenge, round robin and double elimination rounds, answering questions prepared by top national marine researchers and educators. Students will test their marine science knowledge with questions on biology, chemistry, geology, technology, social sciences, and geography.<\/p>\n


\n\tParticipating schools in 2004 include: Bridgeport Aquaculture Vocational School (Bridgeport, CT), Classical HS (Providence, RI), Cranston HS East (Cranston, RI), Cranston HS West (Cranston, RI), Marianapolis Prep School (Thompson, CT), Narragansett HS (Narragansett, RI), North Kingstown HS (North Kingstown, RI), North Providence HS (Providence, RI), Plainville HS (Plainville, CT), Portsmouth HS (Portsmouth, RI), Southington HS (Southington, CT), Waterford HS (Waterford, CT), West Warwick HS (West Warwick, RI), and Woodstock Academy (Woodstock, CT).<\/p>\n


\n\tThe winning regional teams from across the nation will be invited to the national competition on April 24-25, which will be held in Charleston, South Carolina. <\/p>\n


\n\tEach of the five students on the top two teams in the Quahog Bowl will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, an oceanographic sampling field trip on the R\/V Cap\u2019n Bert, and many other prizes.<\/p>\n

Organized by the 溏心vlog免费B站 Office of Marine Programs, the 2004 Quahog Bowl is hosted by the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) in collaboration with Mystic Aquarium and the Institute for Exploration, a major sponsor.<\/p>\n


\n\t“The goal of this national initiative is to interest bright high school students in ocean sciences,” said Gail Scowcroft, Associate Director of Marine and Environmental Education at 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Office of Marine Programs. “We have a critical need in the U.S. for scientists who will be able to solve marine-related problems, and we are pleased that the 溏心vlog免费B站 Graduate School of Oceanography is able to provide this service to Rhode Island and Connecticut high school students.”<\/p>\n


\n\tPatterned after the National Science Bowl, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl was created in 1998 by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE) to provide a forum for students who excel in math and science to receive national recognition for their diligence and talent while broadening their awareness and understanding of the oceans. <\/p>\n


\nNational sponsors of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Office of Naval Research, the Oceanographer of the Navy, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, Minerals Management Service, the Ocean Conservancy, Sea Education, Dolphin Quest, Hilton, Oceanic Engineering Society, and the Brunswick Public Foundation.<\/p>\n
