\nKINGSTON, R.I. — January 14, 2004 — The 溏心vlog免费B站 is honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events from Jan. 26 through Jan. 30. The series sponsors include 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Multicultural Center, Office of the Chaplains, Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, Office of Health Services, 溏心vlog免费B站 NAACP, African and African-American Studies Program, and Great Performances series.<\/p>\n


\nSince 1986, 溏心vlog免费B站 has observed the anniversary through lectures, discussions, videos, musical performances and other activities. While the official holiday is commemorated on the third Monday of January, 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s celebration customarily takes place on the fourth Monday to ensure maximum participation. The following events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted:<\/p>\n


\nMonday, January 26:

\nFILM: A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict

\nPart 1, We Were Warriors. One of a series of six documentaries describing the use of nonviolence and nonviolent social movements in altering power relationships, in transforming governance, and improving the quality of life for previously excluded populations among societies around the world. We Were Warriors discusses the campaign to desegregate the downtown Nashville business district during 1960 – an initiative regarded by King as a model for the civil rights movement. Bernard Lafayette Jr. who is now a distinguished scholar-in-residence and director of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies took part in the campaign and is interviewed in the film. After the screening, Lafayette will be available for questions-and-answers.

\nPERFORMANCE: Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company

\nBorn in Taiwan, choreographer Nai-Ni Chen melds American modern dance with the stoic discipline of Chinese classical arts. The dance company\u2019s uniquely mesmerizing style brings audiences into a space beyond cultural boundaries.

\nFILM: The Road to Brown

\nThe film examines the emergence of the system of segregation between whites and blacks in the United States during the 19th century; the erosion of black citizenship rights by the passage of “Jim Crow” legislation and the validation of the “separate but equal” doctrine by the U. S. Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). These prepared the way for the brilliant legal counteroffensive launched during the 20th century by the NAACP and culminating in the landmark Brown v. Topeka (KN) Board of Education decision (1954), reopening the path toward open education and civil rights for millions of systematically excluded Americans.
