\nKINGSTON, R.I. — October 20, 2003 — How is a writer to speak of horror? How is a writer able to convey the tragic images of globalized terror? Amitava Kumar, a professor of English at The Pennsylvania State University, will address these questions as part of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Honors Colloquium on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.

\nThe lecture, “Globalization of Fundamentalisms,” will be presented in the Chafee Social Science Center, Room 271 at the University\u2019s Kingston campus. All of the lectures and arts programs in the colloquium, “The Futures of Globalization,” are free and open to the public.
\n
\nKumar\u2019s lecture will discuss the challenges of writing about the events of September 11.
\n
\n“One has to pay attention to what has been ignored or hidden or buried under the public pronouncements of the powerful,” said Kumar, who believes that a writer\u2019s affiliation is not to a nation, but to the imagination. “With this in mind, how is one to understand the truths of globalization as well as global terror?”
\n
\nIn the second part of his lecture, Kumar will discuss the aftermath of the September 11th attacks in relation to the globalization of fundamentalism. He believes the effect of the attacks has made it possible for all kinds of groups to adopt positions of hate and promote terror. Kumar will use excerpts from his new book, Husband of a Fanatic, as the basis for much of his speech.

\n\tKumar is the author of Passport Photos and Bombay-London-New York. His non-fiction and poetry has appeared in Harper\u2019s, American Prospect, The Nation and Frontline.
