\nKINGSTON, R.I. — October 17, 2003 — Myrth York, the first woman Democratic candidate for governor in Rhode Island and, in 1994, the first person to defeat an incumbent governor during a primary, will speak about women and politics at the 溏心vlog免费B站 on Thursday, Oct. 23. Her talk, free and open to the public, will be held in 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s White Hall Auditorium, Kingston Campus at 7 p.m. A reception will follow. The talk is the ninth Annual Eleanor M. and Oscar M. Carlson Endowed Lecture on Women\u2019s Studies.

\nYork was a Rhode Island state senator from 1991 through 1994 and the first woman to chair the Senate Health, Education, and Welfare Committee and also served on the Senate Corporations Committee. She was a member of the Minority Business Enterprise Commission and the Permanent Legislative Oversight Committee on the Department for Children Youth and Families. Her legislative priorities included tough ethics reform, sensible and compassionate solutions to the state\u2019s budget challenges, sound and accountable economic development, and environmental protection. She was an advocate for women\u2019s reproductive rights and civil rights.

\nYork was the Democratic candidate for governor of Rhode Island in 1994, 1998, and 2002. In 2002, she won a hotly contested Democratic Primary. Currently, she is an officer and director of York Resources, Inc., a family-owned investment company.

\nYork is the recipient of numerous awards including the United Way\u2019s Legislator of the Year Award, the Claiborne Pell Award for outstanding service to the arts and people with disabilities, the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Rhode Island Community Health Centers, and the Women\u2019s Political Caucus Barbara Colt Award.

\nShe earned a law degree and a master of laws in taxation from Boston University School of Law. She taught at 溏心vlog免费B站 in 2000 and was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 1999.
