\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. — February 16, 2006 — “Aging in America: A Success and a Challenge,” is the topic for the first annual Malford Thewlis lecture, presented by the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center and 溏心vlog免费B站 Program in Gerontology. Kenneth Minaker, MD, chief of Geriatric Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, will discuss what research has to say about the truths and falsehoods of promoting good health in older adults.<\/p>\n


\nFree and open to the public, the program will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium at the University\u2019s Kingston campus.<\/p>\n


\nAn associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of its Interdisciplinary Center on Aging, Minaker recently received the Nascher Manning Award from the American Geriatrics Society, which was given for distinguished life-long achievement in clinical geriatrics. <\/p>\n


\nThe annual lecture is named for Malford Thewlis, one of the founders of the American Geriatrics Society in 1942. A long-time resident of Wakefield, Thewlis wrote The Care of the Aged: Geriatrics, a 1919 textbook on geriatric medicine. <\/p>\n


\n“We wanted to acknowledge this local man\u2019s pioneering work and contributions to the field,” said Phillip Clark, director of the RI Geriatric Education Center and a specialist in gerontology and geriatrics education programs. “Many of his works are still cited and relevant today.”<\/p>\n


\nThe RI Geriatric Education Center is comprised of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Human Science and Services, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, and Brown Medical School. Among the aims of the Center are to better serve the needs of the growing elderly population by improving the knowledge and skills of health care and human service professionals in the area of geriatrics and gerontology.<\/p>\n
