The Silken Phoenix is a uniquely original composite of diversified chamber music featuring the Core Ensemble \u2013 a trio of percussion, piano and cello, and passionate theatre with Australian born Chinese actress Fiona Choi playing multiple roles as three of Asia\u2019s foremost women poets: Izumi Shikibu \u2013 (10th Century Japan), Ho Xuan Huong \u2013 (18th Century Vietnam) and Li Qingzhao \u2013 (12th Century China). <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe Core Ensemble  will play music by Asian composers such as Kui Dong, Melissa Hui, P.Q. Phan, Chinary Ung, Somei Satoh, Keiko Abe, Bun-Ching Lam, Lei Liang, Tan Dun and Chou Wen-Chung as a complement to the narrative of playwright Wang Ping.  Through drama, comedy and poetry, the lives of these three women are explored achieving artistic expression and individuality, thus dispelling the myths of demure Asian women.  This performance is sponsored in part by grants from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the New England Foundation for the Arts.
