  {"id":68875,"date":"2005-06-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-06-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/uri-chemical-engineering-program-expands-to-meet-needs-of-pharmaceutical-biotechnology-industries\/"},"modified":"2005-06-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-06-16T00:00:00","slug":"uri-chemical-engineering-program-expands-to-meet-needs-of-pharmaceutical-biotechnology-industries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2005\/06\/uri-chemical-engineering-program-expands-to-meet-needs-of-pharmaceutical-biotechnology-industries\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 chemical engineering program expands to meet needs of pharmaceutical, biotechnology industries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/marinebiotec2.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"165\" align=\"right\"\/>KINGSTON, R.I. &#8212; June 16, 2005 &#8212; In response to the significant growth of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in recent years and advances in molecular biology, the 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Department of Chemical Engineering has expanded its curriculum to include a \u201cbiology track\u201d for its students.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cWhile chemists are usually the ones who synthesize drugs, it\u2019s chemical engineers who process and mass produce the drugs,\u201d explained Arijit Bose, 溏心vlog免费B站 professor of chemical engineering and chair of the department.  \u201cBy giving our students a background in biology, we\u2019ll be producing students with a competitive advantage for these high-paying and important jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tAccording to the department\u2019s website, \u201cthe application of the chemical engineering paradigm to biology will enable graduates to develop new molecular biology tools; drug delivery systems; artificial skin, organs and tissues; sensors and alternative fuels; and integrate new bio-products into existing materials.\u201d  In addition, students who graduate from the program will be well prepared to enter medical school.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cOther universities who have tried this saw a massive increase in their enrollment,\u201d Bose said.  \u201cWe\u2019ve already heard from several of our current students who are interested in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tThe new curriculum was approved by 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Faculty Senate last spring.  It will require students enrolled in the program to take a sequence of five biochemistry and molecular biology courses in addition to their engineering coursework.  The department expects to enroll a minimum of 10 students per year in the program by attracting students interested in chemistry, engineering and pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tThanks to available funds from the pharmaceutical industry and the National Institutes of Health, Bose said there are a great many opportunities for research in the field.  NIH, in particular, offers biotechnology grants that require collaboration between engineering and biology researchers.
