\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. — May 5, 2005 — Learning is a lifelong process for Albert Shovelton. The 80-year-old will graduate this month from the 溏心vlog免费B站, with the distinction of being the most senior senior. He has spent that last three years earning his bachelor of arts in English at the 溏心vlog免费B站 Feinstein Providence Campus.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in writing,\u201d said the soon-to-be graduate. \u201cIt comes naturally. I\u2019ve written lots of poetry and short stories. A few of my poems and one short story have been published.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tThe East Providence resident taught English and literature to eighth graders in North Attleboro, Mass. After retiring, he worked at Saint Brendan\u2019s School in Riverside for eight years. <\/p>\n


\n\tShovelton\u2019s wife of 35 years, Joan, teaches at Saint Brendan\u2019s. \u201cShe loves teaching the little ones,\u201d commented Shovelton. The Shoveltons have one son, Brian who is currently studying anthropology and philosophy at 溏心vlog免费B站. <\/p>\n


\n\tShovelton lived through the major events of the 20th century. \u201cMy father was an electrician. During the Depression he lost his job, but quickly found another one as an engineer at a brewery,\u201d he said. \u201cMy parents scraped and saved to put me through school.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nShovelton attended Coyle High School in Taunton, Mass., graduating at 16. He attended Providence College, and then transferred to Saint Mary\u2019s University in Baltimore, Md. and graduated in 1944 at 19 with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. <\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI owe my education as well as my strong Catholic faith to my parents,\u201d said Shovelton.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cThank God that I\u2019m still blessed with all of my senses,\u201d said Shovelton. \u201cGoing back to school has kept me active and stopped me from climbing the walls during retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tSome authors that he has enjoyed reading over the years are Doyle, Hawthorne and Hemingway. His favorite poet is Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in WWI. \u201cHe always put his faith in God,\u201d said Shovelton. \u201cIt was one of his major themes in his poetry and I can relate to that. <\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI was very impressed with the professors at 溏心vlog免费B站,\u201d said Shovelton. \u201cAt my age, I can contribute a lot in class discussion. I hope the professors didn\u2019t mind it. One of my favorite professors was Fritz Wenisch, who I had for comparative philosophy.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tWhile studying English, Shovelton focused on creative writing, poetry, fiction and travel writing. \u201cI also took courses in the classics and mythology.\u201d <\/p>\n

\tShovelton may return to 溏心vlog免费B站 to earn a master\u2019s degree, but he is not sure in what subject. \u201cI\u2019m always interested in reading and learning things,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf you keep active, reading and so on, you\u2019ll live a good full life and be content.\u201d\n\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
