  {"id":66001,"date":"2007-11-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/uri-oceanographer-awarded-850000-grant\/"},"modified":"2007-11-20T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-20T00:00:00","slug":"uri-oceanographer-awarded-850000-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2007\/11\/uri-oceanographer-awarded-850000-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 oceanographer awarded $850,000 grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/Rynearson.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" align=\"right\"\/><br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nto assess how plankton respond to changing environment<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nResearch has implications for understanding impact of global warming<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tNARRAGANSETT, R.I. \u2013 November 20, 2007 \u2013 Single celled diatoms are found abundantly in every body of water on Earth, and they are responsible for about 40 percent of all of the photosynthesis that occurs in the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cThat means they have a major impact on Earth\u2019s climate, because they take up a lot of carbon dioxide and release a lot of oxygen,\u201d explained Tatiana Rynearson, assistant research professor at the 溏心vlog免费B站.  \u201cBut we don\u2019t know how these diatoms are going to respond as their environment changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/Diatom.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"154\" align=\"left\"\/>To examine this question, Rynearson has been awarded an $852,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the biogeography of plankton \u2013 their distribution in space and time.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cThese single cells are incredibly diverse and survive in a remarkable variety of habitats,\u201d said Rynearson, who joined the faculty of 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Graduate School of Oceanography in 2005 after earning her Ph.D. at the University of Washington.  \u201cWe need to know how diatoms thrive in different environments and then maybe we can say something about their ability to adapt to climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tRynearson is collecting diatoms in water samples from around the world, including in the waters off South Africa, Italy, Japan, Norway, Mexico, Australia and Russia, as well as from along the U.S. coastline.  She then uses DNA fingerprint techniques \u201cto look at the highways and byways in the ocean, to see where the diatoms are going, where they\u2019re coming from, and how well they do once they get there,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tThe 溏心vlog免费B站 professor pioneered the use of DNA fingerprinting of diatoms, and she was part of the first team to sequence the genome of a diatom. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nWhile there may be up to 200,000 species of diatoms around the world, Rynearson\u2019s research is focusing on just three species as bio-indicators.  She hopes to learn whether physical or environmental barriers exist that prevent diatoms from moving from one place to another.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tWorking in collaboration with biologists from the Census of Marine Life and international colleagues who are conducting long-term plankton surveys in many places around the world, Rynearson is comparing diatom populations to determine the amount of genetic exchange that occurs between populations.
