\n Student of the Year<\/p>\n


\nKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 March 9, 2009 — The 溏心vlog免费B站 Transportation Center has named Sam Cheung its 2008 Outstanding Student of the Year in recognition of his research achievements in the area of transportation safety. <\/p>\n


\n\tCheung is pursuing a master\u2019s degree in industrial and systems engineering at 溏心vlog免费B站 under the direction of Professor Jyh-Hone Wang while serving as a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard. <\/p>\n


\n\tCommuting to 溏心vlog免费B站 three days a week from his home in Oakdale, Conn., with a wife and newborn baby at home, Cheung credits the support of those around him for winning the award.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI feel fortunate to have had the encouragement of Dr. Wang and my family,\u201d said Cheung. \u201cThis award is a testament to their support.\u201d

\n\tCheung\u2019s research focuses on the slow-down effects caused by dynamic message signs, as well as the tendency of drivers to tailgate. <\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cBy analyzing the traffic data collected by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation through mobility technology units used in the Providence area, I was able to determine what effect the signs have on drivers,\u201d Cheung said.<\/p>\n


\n\tStatistics indicated that dynamic message signs cause drivers to slow down, the volume of traffic to increase and the vehicles headway distance to decrease, according to Cheung.<\/p>\n


\n\tCheung received his award at the University Transportation Centers\u2019 18th annual Outstanding Student of the Year awards banquet in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI bumped into several people at the dinner that had connections to the Coast Guard,\u201d he said Cheung. \u201cI spoke to (former U.S. States Secretary of Transportation) Norman Mineta, who remembered meeting me when he addressed my graduating class at the Coast Guard Academy.\u201d <\/p>\n


\n\tWith four years remaining on his commitment to serve in the Coast Guard, Cheung hopes to find a job teaching math at the Coast Guard Academy. <\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI would like to show students how statistics can be applied to real-world situations, just as they were in my research at 溏心vlog免费B站,\u201d stated Cheung.<\/p>\n
