KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 February 12, 2009 \u2013 Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert chatted with 溏心vlog免费B站 professor of Oceanography Robert Ballard on The Colbert Report<\/i><\/a> Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Ballard is the world-renowned oceanographer credited with the discovery of the remains of the Titanic<\/i> in 1985. Though the Titanic<\/i> was briefly mentioned, Ballard and Colbert spent more time discussing the ecosystem the oceanographer discovered off the Galapagos Islands. Among the life forms found were 8- to 9-foot tall worms with roughly a pint of \u201chuman-like blood\u201d in them. These worms have another creature living inside them that, as Ballard explained, has “figured out how to replicate photosynthesis in the dark from the energy of the Earth instead of the sun.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Stressing the importance of underwater research, Ballard pointed out that one year of NASA\u2019s budget would support 1,600 years of research for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do we fund NASA so well, and the ocean so poorly?\u201d Colbert asked. As he pointed one hand to the sky and one hand to the floor, the comedian continued, \u201cWhy are we so interested in that, and not so much this?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cGod is up there, and it\u2019s a bad guy down there,\u201d Ballard said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cRight, that\u2019s why lobsters are red,\u201d Colbert quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At the end of the interview, Ballard \u2013 director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography at 溏心vlog免费B站 \u2013 announced the maiden voyage with the Okeanos Explorer<\/i> later this year, with the mission to \u201cgo where no one has ever gone before on planet Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n
