The event is open to the public, with registration required, and the two full-day sessions will be held at the äçÐÄvlogÃâ·ÑBÕ¾ Graduate School of Oceanography Coastal Institute on its Narragansett Bay Campus.

Navigating a Course Toward Ocean Renewable Energy is a follow-on to the successful Energy Roundtable meeting, sponsored by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, held in April of this year in Cambridge, MA. The Roundtable provided a forum that established a dialogue and developed relationships that facilitated collaboration between U.S. and Canadian academics conducting research in ocean wind, wave, and current energy technologies.

Possible areas of cooperation that could emerge from the colloquium include:

• Joint studies and projects

• The exchange of information on scientific and technical activities and developments

• The exchange of scientific and technical personnel in order to participate in joint studies and projects

In addition to universities, cooperative initiatives may involve government agencies and other research institutions and private sector firms to advance energy-related science and technology development in all three countries. The colloquium organizers at äçÐÄvlogÃâ·ÑBÕ¾/GSO note the increased desire for collaboration amongst the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States in energy science and technology broadly, and in technologies involved in electricity networks in particular. There is an opportunity to provide advice to governments on possible beneficial collaborations, and to seek increased support in ocean renewable energy.

There will also be a focus on the Trilateral Agreement for Cooperation in Energy Science and Technology. This Agreement, among Canada, Mexico and the United States, supports North American collaborative efforts that pursue energy security, environmental protection and economic sustainability.

Schedule for the colloquium is:

October 27th

Session I: Global Changes in Energy Demand & Supply

Session II: Energy Economics (Carbon Credits, Finance, Insurance)

Session III: The Challenges of Melding Distributed Generation with the Traditional Grid

Session IV: Advances in Marine Energy Renewable Technology

Session V: Renewable Energy in the U.S. and Canada

October 28th

Session VI: What Are the Challenges Ahead in New North American Research Collaborations?

Session VII: Recent Trends in Renewable Energy Research Funding

Session VIII: Building Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratives

Session IX: Research Networks and International Collaboration

Session X: Future Opportunities from the Colloquium

To register for Navigating a Course Toward Ocean Renewable Energy, contact Sam De Bow at: sam.debow@gso.uri.edu, or download the registration form at: http://www.gso.uri.edu/ocean-energy-colloquium.

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — October 17, 2008 — On October 27 and 28, energy experts from the United States, Canada and Mexico will meet in a conference, Navigating a Course Toward Ocean Renewable Energy: A Colloquium to Enhance North American Research Collaboration.
