\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 September 25, 2008 \u2013 Charles Mann, journalist and author of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, will discuss how humans transformed the New World before the arrival of Europeans as part of the 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s annual fall Honors Colloquium.<\/p>\n


\n\tFree and open to the public, the lecture will be held Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium on 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Kingston Campus.<\/p>\n


\n\tThe 2008 Honors Colloquium, \u201cPeople and Planet: Global Environmental Change,\u201d explores human-caused global change, its consequences and potential responses through a series of lectures, films, exhibits and a cabaret. Weekly events run through Dec. 9.<\/p>\n


\n\tA correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, Science and Wired, Mann has written about the intersection of science, technology and commerce for many newspapers and magazines, including Forbes, Smithsonian, Paris-Match and The Washington Post. <\/p>\n


\n\tMann\u2019s book, 1491, won a National Academy of Sciences\u2019 award as the best book of the year. \u201cIn a riveting and fast-paced history, massing archeological, anthropological, scientific and literary evidence, Mann debunks much of what we thought we knew about pre-Columbian America,\u201d according to Publishers Weekly. The Miami Herald called it \u201cengagingly written and utterly absorbing… part detective story, part epic and part tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tA three-time finalist for the National Magazine Award, Mann has received writing prizes from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Physics and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He has co-written four other books, including The Aspirin Wars: Money, Medicine and 100 Years of Rampant Competition, and Noah\u2019s Choice: The Future of Endangered Species. He has also written for CD-ROMs, HBO and the television program Law and Order.<\/p>\n


\nThe next Honors Colloquium event will feature Stanford University marine ecologist Stephen Palumbi discussing \u201cThe Impact of Global Environmental Change on Evolution.\u201d It will take place Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
