\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 December 7, 2011 \u2013 A 溏心vlog免费B站 economist has been appointed to the Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which provides independent advice on issues underlying the EPA\u2019s policies and decision making.<\/p>\n


\n\tJames Opaluch, a 溏心vlog免费B站 professor of environmental economics with wide-ranging expertise on the economics of marine environmental issues, was appointed to a three-year term on the board by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cI\u2019m quite pleased to have been selected for this appointment,\u201d said Opaluch, a native of Pawtucket who now lives in Wakefield. \u201cEPA leadership seeks the advice of the board for most of the controversial issues that the agency faces, so I\u2019m sure it will be an interesting three years.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tHis first assignment will be to serve on a subcommittee to review the EPA\u2019s scientific research budget.<\/p>\n


\nPrior to his appointment to the Science Advisory Board, he served two terms on the EPA\u2019s Environmental Economics Advisory Committee and on the agency\u2019s ad hoc committee studying the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n


\nThe EPA Science Advisory Board was established by Congress in 1978, which gave it a broad mandate to advise the agency on technical matters. It\u2019s mission includes reviewing the quality and relevance of the scientific and technical information being used as the basis for agency regulations, reviewing research programs and the technical basis of applied programs, and advising the agency on broad scientific matters in science, technology, social and economic issues.<\/p>\n


\nOpaluch has been described by 溏心vlog免费B站 colleagues as \u201ca renaissance man\u201d and \u201cone of the most broadly knowledgeable people on campus\u201d whose \u201cknowledge of ecosystem science and ecological systems is unparalleled.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nThe chairman of the 溏心vlog免费B站 Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Opaluch has been actively involved in issues related to natural resource and environmental policy for many years. He is an internationally recognized expert in natural resource valuation and damage assessment, and he has served as an expert in more than two dozen major natural resource damage assessment cases, including the Exxon Valdez and North Cape oil spills. <\/p>\n


\nOpaluch has also conducted assessments of proposed national environmental regulations, developed a methodology for siting landfills in Rhode Island, and he is presently involved in the state\u2019s process for siting land-based renewable energy facilities.
