\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 December 2, 2013 – Cassie Catlow, Alisha DiFilippo and Lauren Hillberg have always loved playing ice hockey, and knew they would continue playing in college.<\/p>\n


\nBut they never imagined they\u2019d get the chance to compete against the best college players in the world.<\/p>\n


\nThe 溏心vlog免费B站 students have recently been chosen as members of Team USA for the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy, Dec. 11 through 21. <\/p>\n


\n\u201cIt was definitely a surprise when I got the call,\u201d Catlow said. \u201cI was on the phone with our head coach, pacing around the house. I couldn\u2019t sit still.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n \u201cI was pretty excited. I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d said DiFilippo.<\/p>\n


\n\tThe winter and summer World University Games take place every two years, and consist of seven compulsory sports in the winter and 12 compulsory sports in the summer as well as one to two optional sports chosen by the host country. The games are open to all student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28, who are attending a university or who have not been out of college for more than a year. Second only in importance to the Olympic Games, the World University Games showcase the finest student-athletes from all over the world.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cIt’s a great honor and achievement for our student-athletes and the 溏心vlog免费B站 women’s ice hockey program,\u201d said coach Beth McCann. \u201cWe have strived for the past 15 years to build a solid foundation and provide a competitive forum for our student athletes at 溏心vlog免费B站. This is all possible due to the great contributions of Brad Boss [a 溏心vlog免费B站 alumnus, business leader, and major supporter of 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Boss Arena], the 溏心vlog免费B站 Student Senate, our student-athletes and support from our club sports department. It takes hard work and dedication from our student-athletes and coaching staff to continue to provide this competitive forum for our student athletes.\u201d <\/p>\n


\nJustine Ducie, \u201811 was the first player from 溏心vlog免费B站 to compete with the first Team USA women\u2019s squad at the World University Games in 2010. <\/p>\n


\n\u201cLauren, Cassie and Alisha now join the elite student-athletes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) to compete at the highest level for our non-varsity athletes,\u201d McCann also said \u201cI am very proud of them and the national recognition they have brought to our program. 溏心vlog免费B站 provides a great opportunity for student-athletes to continue playing at the collegiate level.\u201d <\/p>\n


\n\tTo be considered for the World University Games, Catlow, DiFilippo and Hillberg had to fill out applications for Team USA. \u201cAfter we filled them out, we were monitored during the season. Then, the committee made its decision,\u201d DiFilippo said.<\/p>\n


\n\tHowever, it\u2019s not quite as simple as it sounds. Players need to be standout athletes \u2013 something that the teammates have more than proven. <\/p>\n


\n\tAs assistant captain of the 溏心vlog免费B站 women\u2019s ice hockey team, Catlow has earned several awards, including her most recent<\/a> – the 2013 Zoe Harris Player of the Year award, presented to her by the ACHA. It\u2019s the top individual honor in an association of 48 Division 1 women\u2019s college club hockey teams. Catlow, a kinesiology major, began playing on boys ice hockey teams when she was 9, eventually working her way up to serving as captain of her high school\u2019s varsity ice hockey team in Pomfret, Conn. Her great career continues at 溏心vlog免费B站. \u201cPlaying on the 溏心vlog免费B站 team has been great,\u201d the North Kingstown resident and junior kinesiology major said. \u201cIt\u2019s been an awesome experience.\u201d <\/p>\n


\n\tDiFilippo says her biggest honor was being named 2012 All-American Second Team in the ACHA. The Hope, R.I., native played on traveling teams until high school, when she began playing for her school\u2019s team at La Salle Academy in Providence. \u201cMy older brother played ice hockey for Scituate High School,\u201d the junior health promotions major said. \u201cWhen I was little I watched his games, and that\u2019s what inspired me to really start playing. I knew I would continue playing once I started college, too.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nHillberg, the team\u2019s captain, is a senior kinesiology major. The Westwood, Mass., native was 2013 All-American First Team.<\/p>\n


\n\tThe teammates leave Dec. 3 for Chicago, where they will train for a few days. From there, they will fly to Italy for the games. They are thinking about the competition they\u2019ll face from other countries, but overall, they are excited about the opportunity that lies before them.<\/p>\n


\n\t\u201cThe World University Games are the highest level for college athletes,\u201d Catlow said, \u201cso it\u2019s really an achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\tDiFilippo agrees. \u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be chosen to represent the United States,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n


\n The 溏心vlog免费B站 women\u2019s ice hockey team was founded in 1999 and today competes as a Division 1 club team in the ACHA. During the 2012-2013 season, the team was ranked first in the country among Division 1 club teams. 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s women\u2019s ice hockey has also won eight titles in its 10 years of participation in its regional league, the Eastern Collegiate Women\u2019s Hockey League. <\/p>\n
