High school students from throughout state attend jazz camp at 溏心vlog免费B站 July 15 through 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/jared.jpg\" width=\"317\" height=\"219\" align=\"right\"\/>KINGSTON, RI \u2013 July 16, 2013 \u2013 It\u2019s all about jazz on the 溏心vlog免费B站 campus this week for high school students from throughout the state attending a jazz camp hosted by the music department.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tSeventeen campers, in grades 8 through 12, are participating in master classes, ensemble playing, theory classes and more activities to develop their jazz skills and techniques.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t溏心vlog免费B站 music instructors and professional musicians, including the jazz pianist Doug Johnson of Boston, are teaching. The camp will culminate in a public recital by the students at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, at the Fine Arts Center, 105 Upper College Rd., Kingston.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cThe goal of the camp is to make students better jazz musicians,\u201d says camp director Jared Sims, a music professor at 溏心vlog免费B站 and saxophone player. \u201cHip hop, reggae and even rock are derived from jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tCampers start the day with a small group session and then break off for master classes that focus on their instruments. This year\u2019s campers are playing the drums, base, guitar, piano, trumpet and sax.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nAfter lunch, students jam together again and take classes in music theory and rhythm and style. Instructors and 溏心vlog免费B站 alumni also perform for the students, from South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and other local communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cWe get a wide range of students,\u201d says Sims, who teaches sax at the camp. \u201cSome feel more comfortable reading music, others feel more comfortable improvising.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n \tTo visit the camp to talk to students and instructors, contact Jared Sims at 401-874-2765 (office) or 617-233-9552 (cell).
