\n\t\tKINGSTON, R.I., April 5, 2016\u2014By day, Conor McManus studies the larvae of Atlantic mackerel. By night, he\u2019s chasing a puck on a sheet of ice.<\/p>\n


\nMcManus plays right wing on the Bay Blades, the let\u2019s-have-a-blast hockey team at the 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Graduate School of Oceanography.<\/p>\n


\nThe team will face off against its longtime rival, the High Stickers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in Boss Ice Arena on the Kingston campus. The event is free and open to the public. <\/p>\n


\n\u201cIt should be fun,\u201d says McManus, 24, of Milton, Mass., who is on target to graduate from GSO with a doctorate in oceanography in 2017. \u201cWe\u2019re all pretty excited.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nThe teams have been competing against each other since the early 1980s as a way to meet other scientists\u2014and create some school spirit on the campuses.<\/p>\n


\nThe 15-member GSO team is made up of scientists, researchers, staff, students and even an alumnus and his son. Most of the men\u2014yes, they\u2019re all men\u2014played hockey as kids and still love the game as adults.<\/p>\n


\nThey practice on Thursday nights at St. George\u2019s School in Newport.<\/p>\n


\n\u201cIt adds another level of camaraderie and campus spirit to GSO,\u201d says McManus, the team\u2019s spokesman. \u201cI love the people I skate with. They\u2019re nice guys. It\u2019s also great exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nThe team will square off again on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m., for a game at Gallo Ice Arena in Buzzard\u2019s Bay, Mass. The winner of the tournament gets the coveted Niskin Cup. For the record, a niskin bottle is used by oceanographers to collect sea samples.<\/p>\n


\nEd Baker, manager of the marine science research facilities on the Bay campus, has been playing on the Bay Blades for a decade. <\/p>\n


\n\u201cIn the world of hockey there\u2019s something called \u2018hockey disorder\u2019 where you really like hockey a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s an enthusiastic appreciation of the sport. Many of us have it, even though we\u2019re not that good.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nBaker says he\u2019s buddies with many of the High Stickers\u2019 players. \u201cThey\u2019re good guys, but when they get on the ice it\u2019s all business. We\u2019re in it to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
