  {"id":57366,"date":"2015-07-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/uri-engineering-students-win-awards-at-engineering-hackathon\/"},"modified":"2015-07-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T00:00:00","slug":"uri-engineering-students-win-awards-at-engineering-hackathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/uri-engineering-students-win-awards-at-engineering-hackathon\/","title":{"rendered":"溏心vlog免费B站 engineering students win awards  at engineering \u2018hackathon\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\tStudents quickly created medical devices using body sensors<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 July 2, 2015 \u2013 Two 溏心vlog免费B站 engineering students won awards last month for their efforts to quickly create wearable medical devices at a \u201chackathon\u201d at the Body Sensor Network Conference at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tA team led by Nick Constant of West Warwick won the event\u2019s Best Design Award, while Cody Goldberg of Amherst, N.H. was part of a team that won the Best Application Award.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cA hackathon is an event designed to come up with an inelegant solution to something and to make a quick prototype,\u201d explained Constant, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering at 溏心vlog免费B站 in May and will begin graduate studies at 溏心vlog免费B站 this fall. \u201cBecause the whole event only lasts a short time, the solution doesn\u2019t have to look good or be fancy. It just has to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/NConstant.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"321\" align=\"right\"\/>The fast-paced, three-day event began with the participants proposing project ideas and recruiting others to work on the project. Constant proposed what he called Big Ears, a headphone-like device with sensors for monitoring a patient\u2019s vital signs and walking gait so doctors and physical therapists can quantify a patient\u2019s progress during rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cI had no idea what I wanted to do when I got there, but this idea came to me 15 minutes before we had to make the pitch,\u201d Constant said.  \u201cTwo other participants immediately said they wanted to join my team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tGoldberg, who will be a senior biomedical engineering major in the fall, was attracted to a proposal to create a device to monitor the health of patients waiting to be seen by doctors.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cWhen a hospital is flooded with patients, like after the Boston Marathon bombing, it needs a way to manage the influx. Our device was meant to keep track of all the patients and make sure they didn\u2019t have any complications while they were waiting to be seen,\u201d he said.  \u201cIf the device detected problems, that patient would be moved up the priority queue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tGoldberg, who was the team\u2019s programmer, said the focus of his project was to collect as much data as possible from sensors and relay that information to a centralized medical team.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tAfter the first day of the event, each team made a presentation on the status of their project, and at the end of the third day the teams were required to demonstrate their completed device to a group of judges and to the conference attendees.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cAll they gave us to start with was an Intel circuit board and a bunch of sensors,\u201d said Constant. \u201cBut we had the MIT labs at our disposal, and they had tons of tools and other equipment we could use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tIn the end, the finished products lived up to Constant\u2019s description \u2013 they were highly inelegant solutions.  His Big Ears device consisted of a circuit board sitting on his shoulder, sensors wrapped around his ear, and an LCD screen attached to his chest flashing green or red lights. Goldberg wore his team\u2019s inelegant device, dubbed Queue EZ, during the final presentation, which repeatedly flashed his heart rate, a rate he said was unusually high because he was nervous.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tThe students, advised by 溏心vlog免费B站 Assistant Professor Kunal Mankodiya, agreed the event was a valuable experience. Because most of the other participants were from distant countries \u2013 Constant\u2019s teammates were from Slovenia, Italy and Bangladesh \u2013 there were cultural barriers they had to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cIt was one of my first experiences working with a team that was not from America,\u201d Constant noted. \u201cSo it helped me learn to work with an international team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\u201cIt was a great networking opportunity, too,\u201d Goldberg said. \u201cWe got to talk to people from Intel and Sony and professors at MIT, who discussed their vision of the future of technology.
