(Photo courtesy Harvard University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNational Public Health Week is an opportunity to celebrate public health and its success in improving health, increasing emphasis on prevention, reducing barriers, and promoting health equity,\u201d said Mary (Molly) Greaney, event organizer and professor of public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the week, a food drive to benefit Rhody Outpost will take place with donation spots in Independence Square, Suite P; Quinn Hall, Room 101; Chafee Hall, Room 301; Fogarty Hall, Room 125; and the Transition Center, 2 Lower College Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A free CPR training will be available to the first 30 people to register. Once participants complete the online component of the course, they will be scheduled for an in-person training at 溏心vlog免费B站 Health Services. To signup, email Greaney at <a href=\"mailto:mgreaney@uri.edu\">mgreaney@uri.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday, April 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11 a.m. to 2 p.m. \u2013 A skin cancer screening will take place in Quinn Hall. Staff from <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/healthservices\/health-promotion\/\">溏心vlog免费B站 Health Promotion<\/a> will use an interactive skin analyzer machine to teach people about skin safety and offer sunscreen samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11 a.m. to 2 p.m. \u2013 The Department of Nutrition will host a farmer\u2019s market in Quinn Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 p.m. \u2013 The Exercise is Medicine Club will lead a 45-minute walk from the Memorial Union. \u201cWalking is one of the most effective and underrated forms of physical activity,\u201d said Leetal Young, the club\u2019s graduate advisor from Wyckoff, New Jersey. \u201cIt supports cardiovascular health, reduces stress and anxiety, and can enhance focus and academic performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6-7 p.m. \u2013 A virtual panel discussion on grant writing for public health professionals will be led by Assistant Professor Wenhui Feng. <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/dWTGQrTewUUefYVs8\">Registration is required<\/a>. Panelists will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reece Lyerly, Chef Ann Foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Margaret Read, Partnership for a Healthier America<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liz Ward, New York Health Foundation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPractitioners and funders from the food and nutrition space will talk about the current funding landscape, crafting a compelling narrative, and navigating funder relationships,\u201d said Feng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday, April 7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3-4 p.m. \u2013 A suicide prevention training, called Question, Persuade, Refer, will be offered by Health Promotion via Zoom from 3-4 p.m. <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScSHBu9vS6sAM--idYuRPtMU8Ee4aqZoHha9M8sYlzULquSAg\/viewform\">Registration is required<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis gatekeeper training will help people identify concerning behaviors and give practical tools on how to help,\u201d said Jessica Greene, assistant director of Health Promotion and Wellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5 p.m. \u2013 The Exercise is Medicine Club will lead a 45-minute walk from the Memorial Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6-7 p.m. \u2013 The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rigec\/programs\/community\/thewlis-lecture\/\">Malford Thewlis Lecture on Gerontology and Geriatrics<\/a>&nbsp;will be held in Edwards Auditorium. Presented by Harvard professor Laura Kubzansky, the topic of the presentation will be \u201cOptimism and Kindness: Ingredients for a Long and Healthy Life.\u201d The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wednesday, April 8<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11-11:50 a.m. \u2013 Caitlin Nash, an associate teaching professor in the Department of Public Health, will host a <a href=\"https:\/\/uri-edu.zoom.us\/J\/6141011587\">virtual alumni panel<\/a> on careers in public health. It will be presented by the 溏心vlog免费B站 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/career\/\">Center for Career and Experiential Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11 a.m. to 2 p.m. \u2013 A brain injury prevention fair and an impaired driving booth with googles used to demonstrate the effects of alcohol and cannabis will be hosted by Health Promotion and the Department of Public Health respectively outside the Memorial Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1-2 p.m. \u2013 Students can learn about 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Master of Public Health and Accelerated Bachelor\u2019s to Master\u2019s of Public Health programs from Natalie Sabik, associate professor of public health, in Room 308 of the Memorial Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents of all majors are encouraged to learn about these public health programs,\u201d said Greaney.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursday, April 9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1-2 p.m. \u2013 The College of Pharmacy will conduct a Narcan training in Room 308 of the Memorial Union. <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/b139NymhKrne3FeJ7\">Registration is recommended<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2-3 p.m. \u2013 Natalie Sabik, associate professor of public health, will share information about 溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s Master of Public Health and Accelerated Bachelor\u2019s to Master\u2019s of Public Health programs <a href=\"https:\/\/uri-edu.zoom.us\/j\/95464536488?pwd=Y99eZdoFB4sz5G4ogwuNaB16i2G0VH.1\">via Zoom<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4-6 p.m. \u2013 The documentary \u201cBeyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness\u201d will be shown in Chafee Hall, Room 271. The film, which is open to the public, will be hosted by Molly Richard, assistant professor of public health. <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/4oYvHUQJNohqNgPJ8\">Registration is suggested<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHomelessness is a critical public health issue, but it\u2019s also solvable,\u201d said Richard. \u201cThis film highlights the causes of homelessness and what\u2019s working in communities across the country to help people access stable housing. It shows how public health skills can be applied to complex, real-world problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday, April 10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12-3 p.m. \u2013 Health Promotion will sponsor an emergency preparedness\/make a first aid kit event in the Memorial Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunday, April 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12 p.m. \u2013 Public Health Week will conclude with A Good Deed&#8217;s&nbsp;Day Campus Clean Up, co-sponsored by Health Promotion and 溏心vlog免费B站 Hillel.
