Student research on cranberry pollinators takes second in competitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 March 7, 2025 \u2013 Two 溏心vlog免费B站 students were recently awarded second place by Arizona\u2019s Entomological Society of America and the 溏心vlog免费B站 Undergraduate Symposium, respectively. Graduate student Ren Johnson, from <strong>Medina, Ohio<\/strong>, and senior Abigail Gill, from <strong>Lincoln<\/strong>, both in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/\">溏心vlog免费B站\u2019s College of the Environment and Life Sciences<\/a>, researched the life history of the cranberry (<em>Vaccinium macrocarpon<\/em>) in Rhode Island. While they were at it, the pair discovered two bee species that have never been seen in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using three wild sites and one commercial site, the two examined which species of bees could be found on wild cranberry plants versus species likely to be found on farm raised plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gill explained that she and Johnson visited the bogs regularly, covering about a half kilometer with each trip. According to Johnson, \u201cdoing any research in bogs and swamps is always very difficult\u2014lots of boots filled with water and trudging through waist deep swamps. Finding a way to get to the bees was the most difficult part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cranberry bloom time is mid-June to late July, which means being out in the heat and damp. It also means that the two had to battle other elements as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are lots of biting flies that are not deterred by mosquito repellent,\u201d she said. \u201cWe had to wear beekeeper veils to keep them out of our eyes. Luckily, no one got stung, and there weren\u2019t a lot of aggressive wasps or other stinging bees\u2014just a lot of flies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, by the time the research project was done, the team had acquired about a thousand bees to be processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson says that while honeybees may first come to mind when thinking about pollinators, they may not be the best choice for commercial farms. Of the roughly 20,000 bee species in existence, some 90% are solitary, prohibiting being raised in a nest. The poster won second place in the competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re an agricultural species and are not necessarily good for our environment,\u201d she said. Typically, farmers will bring in hundreds of honeybees to pollinate their plants. Cranberries are difficult to pollinate. To cope with this, honeybees engage in \u201cbuzz pollination,\u201d where the bees buzz their wings, shaking the flower like a maraca. Johnson says that bumble bees can perform this behavior, but honeybees are not very effective at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople spend a lot of money bringing in more bees than they normally would because the honeybee pollination process is so inefficient,\u201d Gill said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t find a single honeybee on the wild bogs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they did find were two species that hadn\u2019t been spotted in Rhode Island before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found an Eastern Cranberry bee (<em>Melitta americana<\/em>), which is a specialist bee on cranberry plants,\u201d Gill said. \u201cThat\u2019s not to say that the bee wasn\u2019t in the state already, but we were the first people to go out and actually look at cranberry plants and find the insect on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a consistent common name for the bee, but \u2018cranberry blunt-horn bee\u2019 or \u2018blueberry blunt-horn bee\u2019 have both been used. It has previously been seen in surrounding states, but not in Rhode Island before we found it this past summer,\u201d said Johnson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A clue that there was a healthy population of <em>Melitta americana <\/em>in the area was the presence of a kleptoparasite or \u201ccuckoo bee,\u201d named <em>Nomada rodecki<\/em>, which lays its eggs in the cranberry bees\u2019 nest and eats the bees\u2019 larva and pollen provisions. <em>Nomada rodecki<\/em>&nbsp;is a rare&nbsp;species and has also never been seen in Rhode Island, so it does not have a common name. The entire genus is called \u201cnomad bees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people think that the nomad bees are \u2018mean\u2019 or that it\u2019s bad to see them, but they actually indicate healthy populations of <em>Melitta americana<\/em>,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThis discovery was just as exciting as the discovery of the cranberry blunt-horn bee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Gill, the project was an exciting one. \u201cI learned a <em>lot <\/em>in this position,\u201d she said. \u201cOne of my takeaways is that I would love to keep working in pollination ecology.
