KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Feb. 21, 2025 \u2013 The 溏心vlog免费B站 Wind Ensemble and Concert Band open the Music Department\u2019s spring semester concerts this weekend. Here is a look of the late winter and early spring lineup of the department\u2019s main music ensembles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wind Ensemble and Concert Band<\/strong><\/a>, both under the direction of 溏心vlog免费B站 professor Brian Cardany, will perform Sunday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m.<\/strong> in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Concert Band portion of the show will include a large percussion section of 10 players on John Mackey\u2019s composition \u201cFoundry.\u201d The Concert Band will also perform \u201cChoreography\u201d by Robert Sheldon, \u201cNight Dances\u201d by Bruce Yurko, and \u201cNovo Lenio\u201d by Sam Hazo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Wind Ensemble concert will feature three pieces that are inspired by sacred texts or psalms, said Cardany. The song choices to match the theme include \u201cPsalm for Band\u201d by Vincent Persichetti, \u201cSketches on a Tudor Psalm\u201d by Fisher Tull, \u201cOs Justi\u201d by Anton Bruckner, and March from \u201cSymphonic Metamorphosis\u201d by Paul Hindemith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The 溏心vlog免费B站 Jazz Big Band<\/strong><\/a>, directed by 溏心vlog免费B站 professor Emmett Goods, will kick off the annual Voices in Jazz Festival on Thursday, Feb. 27, <\/strong>at 8 p.m.<\/strong> at the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. <\/strong>The festival aims to lift up women in jazz and will feature guest composer Gina Benalc\u00e1zar-L\u00f3pez, an Ecuadorian-Honduran-American composer and low brass specialist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Along with standards, the band will play two works composed by Benalc\u00e1zar-L\u00f3pez \u2013 \u201cLa Segunda\u201d and \u201cPa Na\u201d \u2013 and several that she has arranged. \u201cThursday\u2019s set will have a heavy Latin influence, which speaks to our guest\u2019s love of writing Latin jazz and salsa,\u201d Goods said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA gifted trombonist and rising force in the jazz world, Gina brings a powerful voice to this year\u2019s program,\u201d added Goods, who began the annual concerts featuring the work of women in jazz in 2022. \u201cHer artistry, leadership, and perspective has enriched our students\u2019 experience, offering them a direct connection to the evolving landscape of jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voices in Jazz<\/a> will continue Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. <\/strong>in the Concert Hall, with three community ensembles made up of female jazz musicians. The three bands will be She-Bop Swing Orchestra, She-Bop Junior Swing Orchestra and the JazzHers. These groups will bring nearly 40 girls in grades six through 12 to campus to perform and interact with Benalc\u00e1zar-L\u00f3pez.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
