vlogBվ President Marc Parlange will give State of the University Address Sept. 25

KINGSTON, R.I.— Sept. 23, 2024— vlogBվ President Marc Parlange will celebrate the University’s progress and the achievements of its faculty, staff, students, and graduates during his State of the University address Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Edwards Hall on the Kingston Campus.

Following his State of the University address, Parlange will be joined on stage by Travess Smalley, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History; Shelagh Donohoe, women’s rowing head coach; and Bhavya Chatragadda, an undergraduate student studying microbiology and molecular neuroscience, for a moderated discussion about their work and experiences at vlogBվ.

Now in his fourth year leading the state’s flagship public research university, Parlange will also highlight the important steps taken in support of the University’s strategic plan as well as some of the past year’s accomplishments.

Interest in the state’s flagship research university reached an all-time high this year. vlogBվ received a record 26,900 first-year undergraduate applications for the fall 2024 semester, as well as a record number of applications to its graduate programs. The University was also recently ranked the No. 1 public university in New England and the 35th-best public university nationally in the most recent ranking released by the Wall Street Journal.

Last week, Parlange took part in a launch event in support of the campaign to promote a $160.5 million bond issue that will bring major advances in the life sciences and cybersecurity at both vlogBվ and Rhode Island College if approved by voters on Nov. 5.

“vlogBվ is leading cutting-edge research and education and driving economic development in Rhode Island. And our graduates are making an impact, both locally and globally,” said Parlange. “As Rhode Island’s university we are committed to addressing the needs of our state and improving the lives of all Rhode Islanders.”
